Hi, my DG834GT just died on me after only 8 months of usage - has anyone else had simmilar probles ?

Where do you live? Does it get hot there?

If you google "dg834gt problems" you will pick up that basically the whole dg834 range have overheating problems.

I was also looking at buying one but this made me think twice as I live on the Natal North Coast and it gets very hot and humid here.

Considering getting a Billion 7202 or 7402.

dg602

I have a 602 and i have since lost plenty respect for netgear. Port forwarding doesn't always work, dns does not get forwarded most times and it looks like the rest of the world has the same problem... netgear's own forum has loads of complaints with no reply from them... either they can't sort it or just couldn't be bothered. Last netgear I buy... Same for their wlan cards - intermittently need re-install of drivers... BUT netgear wlan is 10 times better than Belkin - I had endless problems with 2 belkin cards and a few with netgear. My intel wlan card out does anything else i've seen.

Hi there,

I bought my Netgear DG834GT about 3 months ago and never had ANY problems whatsoever. I use port forwarding without any problems and never had to re-boot it since I started it up, unlike my D-Link modem which was burnt by lightning.

I will still choose my DG834GT as I have no reason do go with another.

We use mainly Netgear products for all our wireless and ADSL clients.

Never had any problems with any of the products.

Works like a dream, never goes down, never needs a reset.

We got 4 units out out in direct sunlight on top of roofs in the city for more than a year, and havent had any hassles with any of them.

They might have had a bad batch ?

But personally I can really recommend the netgear range.

Live in Pretoria. Yes I noted that the modem got very hot. Bought a Billion 7402 wireless modem in the mean time. The Netgear will serve as backup from now on after it is repaired

What other Routers can you guys recommend that has the features of the DG834GT. I am starting to believe that mine is faulty

Wireless, 4 Port Switch, Firewall, ADSL Router

Hey Vhawk, let us know how you like the Billion as oposed to the Netgear ie stability, temperature etc.

Just tried out a Dlink 504T last night. I didn't have any problems with it. My Netgear DG834GT drops the line 59 times a day. Sometimes less like 10 times. But mostly somewhere in there. The dlink stayed up for a solid 6 hours.

PS I also get faster reading on speed tests. but then again this could be due to other factors on the internet.

http://forum1.netgear.com/support/viewtopic.php?t=2361

after doing multiple configs, adding a removing stuff, i'm positive its down to the wireless setting at Auto 108mbs. if you change it g & b on channel 11 everything is fine. alright so you could say you cant run at 108, but at least you get a constant connection. based on this netgear will hopefully address this on releasing a fix (ie firmware upgrade)

So yeah, anyone having issues with their Netgear, try:

1. Swapping out power adapters (wall wart)
2. Changing the wireless setting to B + G and channel 4

But of course switching to B + G mode is a waste of the GT, because I bought it for the sole reason of connecting at 108 via wireless. If I wanted to connect at 54 I would have gotten the G.

ADSL Issues

I just found this posting and seems to confirm my observations as below which does include what appear to be overheating issues

There are also petitions out there to get Netgear to fix thier problems, so it must be getting bad
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been having lots of issues with both the DG834GT and WGU624 (related but
non ADSL)

I have come to the conclusion that there is an underlying problem with some of these routers.

They appear to be connected to the outside world and I have had the following types of issues.

1. VOIP works whilst browsing doesnt

2. Can send emails but can't receive

3. Cannot get an IP address for the PC's on the LAN

4. IPConfig /Renew doesn't renew the IP (Whilst VOIP is working !!!)

5. Cannot access router admin

6 Only fix is reboot (power cycle)

7 Also sensitive to the line and actuall WAN (to ISP) data rate may be set too

high and the router cannot get sync or looses it shortly after connecting, but appears to be connected

There are other strange things but untimately it appears that the Routers DCHP stops working.

Also seem worse when ambient is warmer

Also if the LAN side times out (settable 0-99 mins) it will get into to the above "locked out" condition.

I know this doesn't help and I have tried to get support from Net gear but as yet I have no absolute answer, but may be this may open a few avenues to explore

ive been through 2 netgear routers in 4 months, the second one failed after only two weeks of usage

Netgear - Line dropppppping

Just read through this thread, and will add my R100's worth. My company also supplies lots (and lots and lots) of Netgear products, and they all seem very good, solid performers. Recently, I had to move to a new place, and didn't have the luxury of choice between iBurst (which I've never had a problem with) and a Telkom ADSL fixed-line. I naturally bought a Netgear, and have been having lots of issues with it dropping the line (sync light flashing constantly), battling to reconnect, slooooow performance (at times). These all sound like a bad line, but of coarse, Telkom came out, and "tested" the line; no fault found (ha ha). Anyway, I've now tried 3 new Netgear routers (from stock!!) and they ALL exhibit the same problems. Since dropping the MTU, and changing the firmware to the [North America ??!!] version, I appear to be getting better / more stable connectivity. The Telkom technician (who was very understanding) left his Marconi "BroadBand" router at my place, and it was up for 9hrs straight ! Go figure. I haven't given up on Netgear yet, but I am very close! What other (good) routers would you guys recommend ? I've been sold to the Netgear Devil, (for work purposes) so haven't had much practical experiences / nuance learning / intimate knowledge of any other brands.

Hope this helps someone, and that someone could help me too !

Telkom is evil.

vhawk, check and see if its not the firmware maybe, i always check on the internet if the firmware are stable or if anyone else had problems with it before i update. I have both the DG834G and the DG834GT. Never had any overheating problems. I have the DG834G for over a year now. The DG834GT is here with me in cape town and the DG834G is with my parents in knysna. Im also running a vpn between the two. Never had to reset the routers at all. Just took them down that time when cape town had all those power failures. On both we also use the WiFi extensively. No problems what so ever.

I am having the same problems. This modem/router is giving me so much trouble thesedays. Can anyone recommend a Dlink or other brand that has the same features as the DG835GT? The Billion ones look good too. Please, I need to replace this thing.

me too....:) no problems with mine :)

y dont you ppl take it back to netgear?

I have the DG834GT. I noticed it gets extremely hot. It recently started to drop the line. I upgraded to the latest firmware and I can no longer access the config page, even using a cable I simply get the message that connectivity is "low or limited" and the page 192.168.0.1 cannot be reached. In fact connectivity is non-existent as far as I can see although the matching wireless PCI card in my laptop says that it has connected. Since I cannot access the config page (from IE on WinXP Hoime SP2) I assume this router is now stuffed and good for nothing but the bin. Am I correct?? Thanks for any advice.
