To all the peeps that sit and read and cheer and cry in silence, why not join and lend more weight to the struggle. As the profile of the myadsl site has grown in the last couple of years, so has its credibility. Rpm is now arguably the figurehead of the greatest congregation of savvy, technological minds in South Africa (not to mention p!ssed off)

The more lurkers that register and post, the more concrete and solid the statements made by myadsl become. When RPM meets with the new ceo of Telkom he should feel that no matter how many attourneys, strategists and other blood suckers they have, he has got his own.
 
I think for a lot of people, its kinda like the first time you speak in to a microphone when you are a kid.
Its very scary!!!
I must admit it took me a good few tries to actually start my first post.
So I do sympathise with lurkers, that is if they are indeed just "mike shy" .

Maybe we should have a kind of mentor-ship to help newbies learn to graft this thing?

Adopt-a-Myadsl-master program-for newbies?????
show em the ropes and lern em how to flame? hahah

Nothing. But slacktivists in my sense are people who applaud the activism of others without actually being willing to participate in such activism themselves.

I do take STOF's point, though. But even registering here and saying "I'm a first-timer at this sort of thing, and I don't know what I can do, but you guys have got my vote" is a great deal better than doing nothing at all.

yea, well you get 3 types of people:
those that make things happen
those that watch things happen
and those that wondered what happened.

reason being that some are more qualified
ie: to read and interpret,
others cant interpret
and there are those who cant read.

I'm also on of those peeps who should be spending more time being actively involved and less time reading....

Atleast I stopped 1 lady at work from signing a 24 month soul sucking, teklom contract !

<grin> I’ve seen it happen time and time again, on various boards long gone,(from the days before internet when you still depended on the FidoNet feed and used dos based offline mail readers like BlueWave and QuickSand ), to the present day Forums:

You lurk a few months and see the young and brave (foolish?) at heart flaming long standing members over some triviality. They then get their nuts roasted by most of the members.

They either turn and run or don some Kevlar shorts and just hurl and take abuse until they settle down and become long standing members.

It is wise to get to know the hierarchy. Get to know the sincere ones, identify the trolls and whom to ignore. There are usually a few individuals that are borderline psychopaths, with a mean streak.

But most of all, read the older forums, follow them like soapies and resist the urge to jump in, hauling a double flamethrower. Then, slowly, like slipping into a hot bath, get into a thread where you are comfortable…

Well actually that is not a bad idea.
Like an introduction of sorts.
A forum I recently joined called, The Cavern, does just that. The Cavern

On their forum they have a section called, Introduce Yourself.
And the topic is stated as,
Tell us about yourself or just say Hi.
Tell us how you found out about The Cavern (insert>MyADSL)?

It will up to the poster to state what he feels comfortable with.
Tell us a bit about himself if he so chooses. :)

I suppose it would be a voluntary section. And everyone will in turn make the person feel welcome etc.

Might be nice to mention that posting isnt just for those who already have a connection, but also those who are so pissed off with Telkom *spit*, that they havent taken the plunge yet.
I was waiting for my adsl to be installed before I signed up, but when they told me they had lost staff and that it would take 28 days before they could install, my first thought was "You can train ALGAE to Telkom *spit* competence levels in 28 minutes!" and "Thats it, I'm signing up at MyBroadband so I can have my say whether I have my connection or not!".

So here I am, hi :)
 
welcome darkling - i was also a pre adsl forumee.....only got my adsl conection about 8 months after joining.
