I know the Junkmail, but I don't always trust them. Anywhere else? Do you know of anyone in the Randburg area that sells refurbished older PCs?

I'm not looking for an ancient PC, but a Pentium 4 2.0ghz or above it fine for me. bb_matt sold his *glare* ;)

Thanks

Look around - you should be able to get one for a steal.
Anymore than R1200 for the box is a rip.
Obviously if it's the entire system, it depends what monitor it is, if it's a CRT 17" or below, then it's not worth jack. R250 for a 17", R150 for a 15" or 14"

Fact is, you can get a reasonable brand new system for under R3000

I agree with bb_matt here. There are shops around Midrand that specialise in 2nd hand PCs, but you can get a new PC for pretty much the same price, if not cheaper...

yeah I second that - rather than buying a 'used' PC, if you're after just a basic pc that works - between 1 -3 will get you a brand new system. Try that rather than spending money on someone elses possibly damaged PC..

I've got everything - monitor, keyboard, mouse and all peripherals. I've even got a Celeron 2.0ghz, 40GIG, 128MB GForce, 256RAM, CD Writer. I just need to get the box, and I'll stick in my HDD, graphics, RAM and CD Writer.

Thanks for the pricing though. I'll phone Inter Computers and get specs on a new - but the reason I didn't want is because they don't sell low P4s anymore! They always tell me, 'we do nothing lower than a P4 3.2 with HT' and it works out expensive.

Buy an AMD. :D

Kidding. Well, not really, but I think you'll have a tough time getting the CPU to fit on the m/b.

Have you tried looking online?

Dolby, I've got a PIII with 256mb RAM, a 1gig HD and a TNT1 card - make me an offer ! :D

It's hardly even worth selling a desktop over 12 months in age.
I'm sitting surrounded by R20000 worth (when I got it new) of hardware I'd be lucky to get R3000 for.

As I'm going overseas to London to live in the YMCA and join the winter soup queues, I have to get rid of all my stuff. I sold my entire games collection recently. It was very emotional. :D

if you cant find a decent computer in the junkmail then your stuffed

the junkmail sounds bad but has the biggest second hand computer section in the country if you cant trust that then you must be scared of everything you touch

No ... I'm cautious of any transactions done in the Junkmail. Seems that everyone I know either knows a person that has been scammed, or has been scammed themselves in Junkmail. Plus it is used - which is a risk in itself. As others ave mentioned, it have have been previously damaged, or really low grade materials.

Best to stick to a place one the forumites recommends, aor buy new. It lowers risk.

well you might be right

but i think buying a second hand is no good because its hard to find cpu's etc if something goes wrong and new pc's are not that badly priced

New Items

If you are interrested, here prices for new items

Intel® Boxed Pentium-4 2.8GHz Processor (Socket 478) 1024K OD 533MHz FSB 90nm Technology With 3-Year Warranty R1,445.00

Or

Intel® Boxed Pentium-4 2.66GHz Processor (LGA775) 1024K OD 533MHz FSB 90nm Technology 3-Year Warranty R1095.00
(But you will have to get a new MB with a 775 socket)

I've just phoned Inter Computers, and they said what I thought they'd say : 'I'm sorry, we have nothing under P4 3.0ghz' So I asked for a quote on the basic system of P4 3.0ghz , 40GB HDD and 512 DDR400 RAm - no monitor, no stiffy, no CD/DVD rom - nothing ... and it was over R3000 ;0

skt 478 400fsb/533fsb was discontinued at the end of the year. the rest (skt 478 800fsb) is pretty much no longer available.

So, everything you will find now is lga775 (from intel) which means pci-express

from amd's point of view, skt 754 is due to de discontinued , everything consumer-wise will move to skt 939

(in brackets, what I am saying is that under certain condition a 2.8p4 800fsb northwood is worth a lot more than a 3.0ghz lga775 to some people, like those trying to upgrade laptops etc)

I donate all my old hardware to Bounty Hunters Charity Shop in Melville and it sells for cheep, cheep

It would be great if loads of others did the same, we could practically turn the place into a swop shop.

What is their address because i have a few things to get rid of old printers etc. if they can make something on it then good for them .?

They're above the chemist on the cnr of 4th Ave and Main Street (Beyers Naude), Melville (where the Nedbank used to be)

Coming from RAU down Main (Beyers Naude) turn left into 4th Ave, then at the circle turn left up the ramp into the parking.

Coming from Cresta along Beyers Naude, turn right into 4th Ave and left up the ramp to the parking.

They'll ask you which one of the twenty charity orgs you want to support: Kids, animals, the aged, AIDS, etc. I usually tell them to give the proceeds of the sale to the group that got the least last month.

Hey perhaps forum members in other cities, or other parts of the city should establish a drop-off point charity shop for their unused hardware, that way we can all pick over each others previous latest toys.

http://www.freecycle.org/

looks like there is already a freecycle group in cape town with 449 members.Freecycling will achieve the same, except the charity wont get any money, but then again, you wont be paying for old pc bits, as it's just a huge online swopshop

Perhaps start one up in JHB.
