Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi has claimed that the PlayStation 3 will run games at an unprecedented (and perhaps rather pointless) 120 frames per second.

According to Japanese news service Nikkei BP, Kutaragi's comments were made at the Tokyo International Digital Conference last week where he turned up to extol the virtues of the PS3 and its Cell processor. And, of course, to make his rather astonishing claim.

It's particularly interesting because there isn't actually a TV in the world which can refresh the screen at a rate of 120 times per second. Kutaragi acknowledged this, but said he wants the PS3 to be ready to make the best of the technology once it finally arrives.

Kutaragi pointed out that the Cell chip can decode more than ten HDTV channels at a time, and can be used for rotating and zooming effects. He also discussed some of the different ways in which it could be used - to display actual-size newspaper pages, for example, to show more than one HD channel on the screen at a time, or for video conferences.

Kutaragi also explained how a processing power of 25.6 teraflops could be achieved - by creating a Cell cluster server with 16 units, each made up of eight Cell processors running at 2.5Ghz.

I'd also like to point out that a normal human eye cannot see faster than 60 Frames Per Second.

doesnt television run at 30 fps?
AFAIK MiniDV Camcorders run at 25 fps, but i think high quality cams used for tv, capture at much higher rates.

and im pretty much sure the human eye wont be able to see the differance between 50 fps and 100 fps, so they should rather focus on image quality than fps

TV runs at 25 fps (PAL) and 30fps (NTSC).

The super-slomo cameras used for sports broadcasting capture at 150fps, but they are only used for slow motion footage.

Television Refresh Rate...

Well AFAIK (and I stand under correction), PAL refreshes at 50hz and NTSC at 60hz, this in theory means that a television can fill 50/60 times per second. Standard film is displayed at 25/30 frames per second because it was recorded in that manner where as a signal being generated realtime can be higher.

Or well, thats how I understood it :)

wow, i cs source i get 100 fps with my 6600GT
i will rather stick to my pc thanks, i hate controls and anything made by sony! the only reason i would ever buy a ps3 would be for late night when friends are over, so to me its not worth paying that cash for when your friends are over once in a while

i would never buy a ps3 waste of money... PS3 expensive and the games alone will kill many bank accounts. And i hate consoles. At least u can do more on a PC and the games can be modded for replay value, as well as them being cheaper.

yeah but u have to spend a fortune to keep all the latest games running @ full.

But TV is interlaced, so you divide the scanning frequency by 2. i.e 50 fields/sec = 25 frames/sec for PAL.

Film (i.e. movie films) runs at 24fps.

TV'S still interlaced? I thought that was a thing of the past

Even High Definition Broadcasts are currently interlaced..hence 1080i. ATM there are no TVs available that work with Progressive HD.

last time i checked 720p was also high def, and u can get tv's to display that nativley aswell as 1080i pictures...

ok, so we came to the conclusion that 30 fps is fine, since movies are displayed at that frame rate. TV (being interlaced) runs between 25 and 30. so 120 fps would bes lightly overkill. and it doesnt really help if a ps3 runs at 120 fps on the loading screen. woop de doo. i wanna see 120 fps while there are 64 people running around in battlefield 2 with highest details enable playing on 1080i res. hmmm. show me the yummy!

The other problem is that a really good LCD panel has a refresh rate of 4-8ms, at 120 fps interlaced, it means that each field will be supplied every 4.16ms. Pretty much more than almost all screens can handle.

...true, but no 1080p ATM..

Wrong again, Toshiba have had 1080P rear projection HDTV's out for quite a while. We have an HDTV and it is capable of 480i/480P(EDTV)/720P(HDTV)/1080i(HDTV) and we got this TV quite some time ago.

Link to Toshiba page which shows their 1080P DLP rear projection TV's
