While its questionable how people whose connections are down can see and answer a thread like this (perhaps they have internet at work like me), I'm going to ask it anyway:

Anyone in the Rondebosch (686xxxx), Pinelands (531xxxx), and maybe other areas in Cape Town having problems connecting to ADSL this morning? Happened to me from around 8 something. My modem's log say no response to authentication request (or something similar). I have a friend in Pinelands (different exchange to mine) who is also having the same problem. I also have friends in the Northern Suburbs (Edgemead, Bothasig) whose connections are still working.

I'm at work now so I'm not sure what the current status is.

It's just come back up

Wasted a bit of time rebooting routers and computers trying to figure out what was going on befor confirming with two others that it was down (I'm in Newlands).

But it's just come back up.

(Luckily I have 3G as a backup)

Lol.. me too. restarted the modem like 5 times, tried three different accounts, even restarted my computer...

Thanks for letting us know that its up.

SAIX notice in this regard (see below).

All affected users offline for 1.5 hours!!!!!!

I would be very interested as to the views of this forum, not withstanding Telkom's cop-out re no effort service, as to whether a professional network supplier would have a standby router?

Telkom seems only to have a single router on any of its links, whether local or international, as whenever a router fails, all connections fail until such time as the failed router is fixed.

There do not seem to be any alternative routing options they can use.

Is this all due to the lack of will to spending money on their infrastructure in order to maximise the amount they can suck out of the trough, or are there sound technical reasons for the lack of backup?

PS I too messed around with everything on this side before trying to call 0800375375 and having to retry for 45 mins before getting through, and then a further 20 mins asking me to be patient. EISH.
