Hi all,

Does anyone in the Ferndale, Randburg area have ADSL installed (telephone number 886-)? I phoned and ordered 192kbit yesterday but the lady said that I might have a fibre optic line, thus I won't be able to get it.

I can't believe that such an important CBD can't get ADSL. Please tell me I'm wrong :(

We're in Surrey Ave, Ferndale and have 2 ADSL lines. Number starts with 781 not 886 though.

Used to have ISDN on our 886 in Ferndale. Just a year ago. I doubt they'd replaced all the copper in the area with fiber... AFAIK, ISDN runs on copper too...

Thanks garp, I'm in Dover Street, so thats very close to Surrey. Maybe there's hope!

Juice, I have an analogue 886 line and an ISDN 886 line. I saw them running lots of fibre in Main Avenue last year so I'm pretty sure that what the lady said is true. Makes me sad :(

The fiber doesn't go to your house though. It should terminate at an exchange and the last bit from the exchange to your house should still be copper... I'm not sure, but I don't the carrier between exchanges makes any difference. The equipment at the exchange should be abe to deal with the traffic, fibre or not... I'm just thinking about it logically. If fiber is an upgrade, then how come it doesn't support the latest technology?

Yeah I hear you. I definitely don't admit to being clued up on this whole copper/fibre thing. Surely Telkom is shooting themselves in the foot by installing fibre though? Unless they plan on buying a lot of mini-DSLAM's, which is rather unlikely.

Well according to something i read somewhere here a few weeks ago - they are.

The whole fibre/copper thing is as follows:
For various reasons (including combatting copper cable theft) Telkom has been installing fibre for the last 3/4 mile from the exchange - then there is a little MUX (multiplexer) box that they stick on the pavement and then the final 1/4 mile is copper. The MUX cant handle ADSL - only voice signals.

Now they have mentioned the possibility of installing mini-DSLAMs in the boxes with the MUX's but i don't think its yet a standard feature...

Thanks for the info ambo :)

I certainly hope they made a plan with Randburg CBD ;)

Aaah! That explains it. Thanks! Seems rather daft though, doesn't it? Like 'Wanted said: it looks like they're shooting themselves in the foot...

We had ADSL in Ferndale but we were also on a 781 XXXX number.

Damn, thx :)

I'm hoping there's at least 1 person here on ADSL with an 886- number. I cancelled my Sentech contract yesterday, and if I can't get ADSL that means I have to go back to those retards! :(

My buddy on York Ave has ADSL - he's on a 326-xxxx line... don't know what number the ADSL is on though he's in the flat and sharing with the main house

Every little bit of info helps. Thanks guys :)

I'm sure I can get them to install a 781 or 326 number if my 886 number can't be enabled for ADSL.

So after all of that, it turns out I can't get ADSL :(

I hate fibre.

M8 of mine is on Pine street, cant remember his home number, getting ADSL this week. Will check on the number and let you know...
