A showdown is looming between Telkom and municipalities across the country as they begin to roll out their own telecommunication networks.

One municipality, Knysna, is already using its own wireless network even though it has received a warning from Telkom. It plans to offer wireless services through a private company to consumers from early next year.

Other municipalities have pilot projects, are testing networks, conducting feasibility studies, completing business plans and selecting private sector partners to offer these services.

Major municipalities that are rushing to offer Internet services from next year include Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Tshwane. They aim to halve their telecommunication costs and promise huge potential savings for consumers who use their networks.

"Telkom sent the company a letter claiming its network in Knysna was illegal and threatened to sue for loss of earnings"

TELKOM CAN GO AND f#(% THEMSELVES!

GO KNYSNA!!!!

Doesn't seem to me like Telkom is losing any earnings by the look of their results! WE ALL KNOW THEY MAKE TOO MUCH MONEY!

to the person that voted "Give in to Teklom", why on this f&$ken earth did u do that????

A telkom employee amongst us... Or a dumbass that clicked the wrong button...

Well either way.. a DumbAss... :o

what about the lost revenue of other companies thanks to telkom. if thats their alibi, uninet and everyone else should use the same excuse to say they've lost revenue thanks to telkoms bandwidth charges and threaten legal action based on that as well. telkom truly can go screw themselves, once the convergence bill is implemented, they can't hide behind that pathetic excuse known of a bill called the telecommunications act.

oh crud! I thought the first line of the poll was Give IT to Telkom so voted for that./.....please know it was a HUGE error.
/blushes profusely and wanders off to clean glasses

Ag shame, don't worry, I almost did the same. Read a little more carefully.

GO THE LIBERLISATION MOVEMENT!!!

Great article!!

Good to see something ACTUALLY being done to screw Telkom right were it hurts... :D

Now all I'm patiently waiting for is to see what kind of services Knysna will be offering it's citizens regarding broadband internet, and at what price...

I will literally be holding my thumbs till then :)
