I'm trying to get my Dreambox 7000s satellite reciever to work with a series 5 DSTV (Ku band) smartcard but not having much luck. I know it works on a 7020 with a series 3 card so I would be interested to know if someone any dreambox working with a series 5 IrdetoII card.

I know these things are quite rare, but any hints or clues would be gratefully received.

Thanks!

have you contacted the local supplier (www.droom****.co.za) he is normally quite helpful.

sorry looks like the afrikaans word for box is a swear word..just edit the url...

"D r o o m d o o s"

LOL! It reminds me of the time when Essex University website was blocked!

I have checked with the distributors and they are also flummoxed. They can only help to a certain extent because they don't want to be accused of aiding piracy - though that's not my intention. It's just that this baby is pretty configurable and if everyone had one, DSTV would not make a profit!!

Thanks for the info. Maybe I should try a Tivo ;)
The more the merrier

Using a TiVo would at least get around the hassle of trying to get the EPG working on the Dreambox, plus you'd get over 30 days worth of guide data and all the other bells and whistles. You could even use a series 2 TiVo as the Dreambox can output in NTSC mode.

Have you now managed to successfully setup the Dreambox? Out of interest, why did you get a Dreambox?

I was using the Dreambox in Europe where satellites and channels are plentiful - easily more than 3000 things to watch.

I haven't got it going yet. I was told it should work here, but I think the CAM emulators haven't caught up with the new smartcards. I could always buy a real cam for around 800 + tax... but ugh.. that's about double the Euro cost as usual!

The DB is really a computer - so it is forever expanding and the guys are finding new ways to do things with satellite all the time, such as card sharing, which you can't do with a Tivo. A lot of the software for the DB is fustrating and complex & without proper documentation, so many see it as a type of hobby. Personally I'd like to use it as a PVR to catch the late programmes.

Does the Tivo have a subscription element or is it all free?

Aside from my Dual view, I've got a Manhattan Plaza ST 120. It has a built in Irdeto II card reader and works with my dual view smart card without hassle. The other advantage of the Manhattan units are that they can perform a blind search and find all available channels from whatever satellites are visible. It can find about 160 channels including all the DSTV & DSTV bouquet channels. Most of the free-to-air channels are a waste of time unfortunately, hence the fact they are free. The Extreme Sport Channel was good while it lasted but it's now encrypted.

I'm aware of the benefits the Dreambox offers and would probably have gone that route over the Manhattan but the Dreambox receivers are rather expensive as well as being troublesome to get to work with DSTV. Not sure if you'll be able to get it to work as a PVR though as there is quite a problem getting the DSTV EPG to work on it, without the EPG it wouldn't be much of a PVR. As for the card sharing, you won't have much luck getting DSTV by going that route. The Irdeto II encryption has yet to be cracked and card sharing has also been reported not to work.

I was watching the Sport channel last week. It's mostly surfing and skateboarding. I see it has gone away now, but FTV (Fashion TV India) has taken it's place on that transponder. They show a lot of bikini and lingerie shows > Now if only the cameraman would keep still :D --- It's encoded in Nagra - as is SABC1,2,3& e - not a great challenge to overcome with a Dream!!

The EPG is a work in progress. Someone has published a workaround so it will take a little while to get it incorporated as an addon for the firmware. I can still see at least 2 shows ahead and sometimes more.

I2 has been reported as cracked (not confirmed), but it will follow a long-winded route while people make money through limited release on the expensive retail smartcards (Didem or Cerebro).
Then there is "Irdeto 3" to worry about. DSTV is labelling their PVR 1s with the new encryption 'version'.

The Dreambox will not work with a series 5 card. Irdeto smartcard Version 4 is fine and no settings change is required.

Hi, I just got myself a DB500, but after reading the above scripts I wonder if that was money well spent. What can I do with it?
I tried using my normal Version 4 Smart Card in it but not sure how to set it up. What satellite to connect to etc. Can anyone provide some insight pls?
Surely no plug & play model.
Thanks
SB
