Keep an eye on this site over the next couple of weeks. Rollout info for Pretoria East will come online within the next 2 weeks or so...

www.goal.co.za

Thanks to Adrian for the info and to Mr Charles Kuun for always being so friendly to MyADSL.

Well its a realy fast site... maby that says something for the new backbone? Not too well made made, but I geuss its just a placeholder really.

How ong has that site been up btw? Is it a recent thing for the PTA project or did that company always exist?

"...attractive to deliver in excess of 5Mbps to each home..." I wouldn't mind that, any idea of costs and if they are going to rollout to CT?

This is supposed to be R300 p/m for uncapped access. From 3mb to 10m apparently.

But only in Pretoria, CPT might get a similar thing ging some time, but not related t this at all unfortunately.

Cool, thx for the info killadoob.

Still patiently awaiting some concrete details!!

:)

i spoke to a guy called warren he said they are loking at around 300 for 5gb not uncapped

That sounds more realistic. I can't imagine them offering a uncapped service while Telkom still controls access to SAT3.

Last time I tried powerline equipment, it was SLOW AS HELL and cost an arm and a leg.

well he also told me they are not buying bandwidth from telkom

and it would take around 6 mmonths before they are fully ready for pta

then a little while later they will take on other areas such as jhb yay

Then where do they get their international bandwidth from? It's either SAT3 or satellite and I'm under the impression that satellite is not much cheaper.

Always-on, fast Internet connection at highly competitive rates. Broadband Intranet within communities, allowing for video distribution, exchange of information and high-speed computer games between the members of the community.

Now THAT sounds very very cool! Imagine, in excess of 5mb intranat to your whole neighbourhood. Games, p2p. Should be much nicer than any adsl currently.

The website is hosted at IS Capetown.

Probably made a plan with IS for bandwidth requirements.

Wrong!!

How can you say things if you are not even 100% sure yourself?

You are right about 1 thing, and that it is hosted in Cape Town, but not on IS.

Anyone that knows, alter.net belongs to former UUnet.
To me that screams UUNET (Verizon??) Cape Town.

This is good news indeed! I live 20km outside of the PTA/Tshwane area and will probably never have access to it but if this system works well and people start switching from ADSL to it it'll force Telkom to drop their rental tarrifs.

I should imagine that most of Telkom's ADSL subscribers are located in the major cities so losing a large portion of their subscriber base in PTA and JHB would get their attention really fast. Much faster than anything our pathetic Ivy can achieve.

The company my mother works at was approached by these guys when they were doing trial runs. She also spoke to some people who were testing the system and they said it was really fast. Hopefully they'll manage their network well and keep the speeds and service levels up.

Bring on the competition - about frigging time!

Paul
