What's with all the cabling on the streetlights?

I was driving around in Boksburg a while ago when I noticed that some people (municipality??) were running some sort cable on the streetlamp poles. Went on for quite a long way and it's going on longer each week. Some of the poles were actually anchored down to make sure that they could take the weight. Didn't make much of it till I was driving in Pretoria yesterday and they had the same thing. :confused:

Now I'm interested in knowing what it's all about. It's too thin to be power so obviously it has to be comms. But why use the streetlamps? SNO maybe?
 
Strange, in my street they've just dismantled all the old wiring on the street lights to put them underground and are isntalling new + improved street lights..
 
Aliens invation maybe?

I think BoPL is still to new and untested. I would have thought somthing like WiMax last mile be better but you never know.
 
Preparing for mass hangings? :eek:

If it was in the City Centre or high traffic area it could be for the monitoring cameras they installing everywhere.

Yes they will be Much improved. You got the nice aluminium looking shiny bands wrapped round the new poles yet? Check them out in the dark ..wondrous things they are indeed and many of them show sensors shining quite clearly through the silvery metal. Alien invasion for sure....

Probably just cheaper to hang the cables in the air than repairing the underground ones. Doubt it is anything telecoms related,
 
Yah in cpt thry replacing robot bulb lights with cluster led lights that are way way brighter :) guess it saves them on maintenance(1 bulb vs multiple led dieing) and maybe energy costs?

Yeh, they last longer and are more visible in fog. Was a discussion on this a while ago on radio. The lights were first tested in PE and reduced the accident rate dramatically.

There are new flashing cat eyes out now too...
 
We don't have street lights...Nothings happining around here...If it's for ADSL what am I going to do?...

Anyways, with the recent BPL coming in, it makes sense to upgrade most of the wiring as possible, but why hang 'em in the air where they can be stolen easier? :rolleyes:

Yeah...lost of robots were missing bulbs.......and it must be a coincidence that my dealer was out of TIK that day :eek: :eek: :eek:
 
Maybe its Sir Richard Branson's cables from Virgin... hahahahahaha.

Hello Friends,

I did a bit of reconnaissance work today and followed this cable in Boksburg. This morning I was on my way to the mall from the South of Boksburg, up Trichardt street, at the old Boksburg Hotel the cable(s) turn left and follow Cason street all the way past the ERPM hospital through past ERPM and down towards Knights, that's as far as I went.

This afternoon (just got back) I followed them from Trichardt street again through Boksburg town. They run up Commisioner street and the make a right on to Leeuwpoort street. From here they carry on aaaaallll the way up Leeuwpoort, past Lever Brothers, over the train bridge, past Collgate and over Atlas/Barry Hertzog street towards Dunswart Raceway.

At the top of the railway bridge (another one) They hook a right into Dunswart Industrial towards Actonville. Just before the end of this road another right into Actonville and then a left down the main street of Actonville. Interestingly, at the circle in Actonville the wires split left and right. Just after the circle to the left the wire stops and it carries on for a while to the left.

This wire come to an end just before Snake road at the robots by the bog new Mosque.

They're all rolled up here, so I think they're going to carry on hanging them from here.

I guess I'm going to have to follow the other end that goes towards Knights tomorrow, I must find the source!!
 
Do you mind taking some pics when you go?

I'm just not picturing "cabling on streetlights". I need a visual! :)
 
I was going to today, forgot the camera both times though!!

I'll post them tomorrow asap.

The strange thing is that it doesn't look like they branch off very often, I noticed maybe 3 or 4 places.

There are funny looking black things every so often aswell.
