I had a problem the whole of today and Telkom could not help me. My web sites are hosted in europe. I can browse my sites but I cannot connect to the mail server or ftp. My server admin emailed me a tracert showing me that they can reach the mail server without a problem. But from South Africa we cannot find it, even if we ping the mail server. I asked various clients to ping their mail servers but nobody could find it. Not even the Telkom opperator could find it when I told him to ping the mail server.

Other friends reported that they had the same problem and their sites are not hosted by me, but by other companies.

Is there anybody else who experienced the same problem. Telkom does not have a cooking clue how to help me or what to do about it. Help from anybody with a brain would be much appreciated.

It is now 23h11 and the problem is still there.

O ja, I use Telkom as service provider and the people I asked to also ping the servers and the other people on other web servers used either Telkom or Mweb as service providers.

is this via a ip ping or url/domain addy ping?

eish...

Again, I have the same problem... we tested on all ISP's... this is a telkom problem as no other ISP works that use Telkom.

However, iBurst & GPRS connections does work.

Problem is... how do you explain to a client that this is Telkom's fault and not yours... eish. I foresee losing business if Telkom keeps this up!

Exactly

Exactly, I have a client who wants to sue me for the business he looses because he cannot download his email :p , but he is to thick to understand that it got nothing to do with me. Even worse is that the idiot at Telkom do not want to believe me that I know what is going on and he keep on telling me they do not have control over my mail server and I should resolve the issue with my host

A routing error in the internet ... it happens ... also blaming Telkom is not going to help you much as they don't connect all the way to Europe themselves but connect to upstream peering points not under their control.

Post the traceroute here.

When I use the saix proxy server I can access my control panels on the domains that's offline... so Telkom need to fix their stuff!

Pitty I cant use their proxy server to download pop3 mail and FTP!

What??

Hey, this is scary. You said
also blaming Telkom is not going to help you much as they don't connect...

If Telkom is not going to help, then what should we do to get our live back?

Open Letter

This is an open letter to Sir Richard Branson:

Dear Sir,

Please use your Virgin power to demolish Telkom and create a new operator. We would all be happy to serve you and your company.

In other words... WE NEED YOU!!!!! :D

Please help....

Cannot access mail from US server ...

Hi,
We have the same problem as Piet. We have not been able to collect mail
from 65.98.60.250 since 2.15am on 19 July.
We have also logged a fault with our ISP - Webafrica and they have passed it onto Saix??? Setting the browser to proxy : cache.saix.co.za Port 8080 has allowed us to log onto webmail and get our messages.
Our tracert also stops at xxx.telia.net
Who takes responsibilty for faults like this? It is day 2 and we are still waiting???
Regards
Bertie

I've tried to speak to somebody at Telkom about this.

It would be easier to ask the statue of Tswane what he thinks the best way would be to get clean than to get somebody at Telkom to pay attention to this issue.

We are experiencing the same, we are hosted in the States. I made the mistake of thinking it may be our servers that were the problem, but no, it is just Telkom AGAIN! There is apparently a problem with the telkom international link. My guess for resolution "Best Of Effort".

Fixed?????

Look at the ITWeb article at
http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/telecoms/2006/0607201035.asp?S=Internet&A=INT&O=E
According to them Telkom said that the cable was fixed at 4 this morning, so why are we still complaining?

I do not know about you guys but I still have the same problem and it is now 14h26 on 20 Jul 2006??
Is there other people who still have the same problem or is it just me?

I've mailed

[email protected]

telling them about my problem and referring them to various threads on this site.

I also included my tel no. and offered to provide them with info if they call me.

A special request to all: Please do the same.

You might get lucky and get a reference no for your trouble.

Thanks for the help Kaspaas. Will do.

Isn't this great. A true Africa story. Members of the public must stand up and work together in all kinds of ways just to get somebody to render a service!
