The physical ADSL line syncing speed would obviously have to be greater than the Telkom rating of your service. I am on DSL512 and do indeed get "512" type speeds (never more than 50-55kB/s), yet my router reports that the physical ADSL line is actually syncing at 1152/384, instead of the expected 640/384. I can only conclude that Telkom must be doing some software bandwidth limiting on the lines, and not relying on the inherent sync speed limitation.
Anyone else syncing at speeds higher than would be expected?
Of course, this doesn't really matter. The only implication that I can think of is that higher line syncing speeds require better noise margins and lower attenuation on the line. So if a user were situated quite far from the exchange, this incorrect sync speed (presumably set by the DSLAM?) might cause problems, whereas if the line sync speed were set lower (but of course higher than the service speed) then the reliability may be better.
