Morning All,

I am looking for a wireless networking router which has a FM transmittor built in.

So that I can stream MP3's through the router to a Hi-Fi. I have heard of this being possible but I have no idea what to look for?

Anyone know?

I use the apple airport express. Its only a wireless access point so you'd need to use it in conjunction with a router but it acts as a print server and you can stream music from iTunes to it.

Seems like a lot of trouble to go to as opposed to say tuning into a radio station using the hi-fi? Most hi-fi's have radio tuners, I think they were added before the MP3 streaming functions :D

If you haven't got the hi-fi yet and you only want the streaming... why not try marrying the airport express with these babies.

Those look nice - how do they compare with the apple hifi? I heard one of those the other day at PnP and it sounded pretty good but the price made my nads clench up. ;)

The thing is I have all the Hi-Fi's around the house and if I could stream MP3's from my pc through the router then I can either listen to the radio, cd's or tune into the MP3's.

Unfortunately I just don't like iPods. I know I must be the only person in the world, I just never understood what is so great about them and I am not about to go and spend thousands to setup what I have heard I can already do with my existing infrastructure.

No need for nads in knot!

OK, slow down... you don't need any ipods to get this to work.

Sounds like all you need is the free download of itunes, and an airport express for each hi-fi you want to hook-up.
itunes can stream all of your mp3's - you don't even need to convert them.
The airport expresses will bridge to each other forming a big WLAN, and if you link in ur dsl modem, you'll have internet wherever you have wifi signal.

U can also play different music/streaming radio etc to the different hi-fi's if they are on a differnt airport - all of this from one source library if you want... just set ur main itunes library to be shared, and ur other itunes equipped pc's will have the same functionality as ur main pc.

I haven't found any other piece of kit that allows this, and gives the print server functionality at the same time.

I've got a couple airport expresses littered around plugged into stereo's. I can stream to them individually or en masse. Great for parties/braai's too.

The apple hifi is loud... made for outdoors and to be portable... the audiophile quality is a marketing joke by apple.

I haven't heard the audio engine yet, but i'm getting a demo setup. I'll let u know how it goes. The fact that you can get stereo placement sounds like a big advantage over the apple hi-fi, plus its got all the funky little applecentric touches, like the short cords and power plug for airport and input and charging off the dock/ipod.

They also have it setup for the digital music... they're not claiming that its a yamaha/kef/b&w/bose quality system.

I'm looking at it for a home office setup.

Wonder when they wil do a 5.1/7.1 system with wireless to the surround speakers?

there are planty of cheap devices that do this (ala itrip) on ebay much like this:

I wouldn't go wireless streaming server quite yet tho.

Range on all of the FM transmitters for ipod/mp3 is pretty abyssmal. Thats not a real solution except for 1 hi-fi and you have the tx within about 2m of the rx.

I'm with Bwana on the wireless streaming... works fine for me over my wi-fi router, even with just 2 bars reception. Will probably work a bomb using the airport express.

Mine (a cheapo) does ~5m in my house through walls.

Okay this airport thingie seems like what I need.

Two questions
1. Do I have to buy from iTunes or can I stream any MP3's I currently have?
2. I don't need a Mac do I?

1. Nope (you can import your current MP3's into iTunes)
2. Nope (iTunes for Windows)

You can stream anything you can play from itunes so the only criteria is that you use itunes which in itself is mac or pc - not linux afaik.

If you have an older iTrip this little hint improves the signal beyond words - http://www.i-hacked.com/content/view/200/90/ - I've got great sound from 10+ meters.

EDIT - this is becoming very mac-centric - do I add it to my sig?

Bwana... Okay I know I sound stupid here, but what can iTunes play?

I have never seen the system at all...
pretty much the standard ones apart from protected wma's. Do you have a specific format in mind?

Its a free download from - http://www.apple.com/itunes/ - neat feature it lets you share collections across your lan so you dont have to duplicate your library from machine to machine. :)
