Apple recalls 1.8m notebook batteries
Apple today in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall of its rechargeable lithium-ion batteries with cells manufactured by Sony for certain iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 notebooks. The recalled batteries can overheat, according to Apple, posing a fire hazard to consumers. Apple said it has received nine reports of batteries overheating, including two reports of minor burns from handling overheated computers and other reports of minor property damage. Affected models include the 12-inch iBook G4, 12-inch PowerBook G4, and 15-inch PowerBook G4. Apple is instructing owners of these notebooks to remove the battery from the computer to view the model and serial numbers labeled on the bottom of the unit. ...(more)

Between these and the 4 million dell is recalling that's a lot of batteries.

Looks like Sony's production quality controll is for a ball of crap, /me wonders how the PS3 is going to perform with this kind of production controll.

I call this the 'China Syndrome'. Lots of manufacturers contracting out work to China where costs are lower, but quality control is makeshift. They seem prepared to accept higher failure rates and product returns in exchange for higher profits.

In this case I'd have to put the blame on Sony **spit**.

jeepers, not Apple too?? ;)

Did Sony manufacture batteries for both Dell & Apple? [I'm capped internationally - thanks for nothing ICASA].

I would blame not only Sony, but also the companies that didn't sufficiently quality test the batteries in the first place before reselling them to the world...

On the Apple recall, I am amazed that they didn't recall the Intel Macbook Pros as well. Mine gets **** hot, so I don't even want to know how hot the dodgy batteries get

Yeah - Sony manufactured them and thats where the blame has to lie. Obviously the exploding battery is a comparative rarity so quality assurance probably wouldnt have picked it up. You expect a certain degree of quality from Sony after all. They do make some of the best rootkits around after all :p

Someone did a comparison not long ago and Dells get plenty hot too. They were within a few degrees of each other. The rev B ones will probably run a lot cooler.
