Just a question about Netgear's VPN functionality. A friend and I have setup a VPN over our Netgear routers. He has a DG834 and I have the DG834G (the same thing, mine just has wireless). Thing is, we got it to work, but the problem is that it disconnects after about 2mins. Any reason why or any ideas?

We are both using DynDNS to compensate for our dynamic IP's(the router supports this)

Any help will be appreciated:)

Ok, we got it fixed, but is there someone clever out there that knows how we can set the router so that we have one network? The whole idea is so that we can play LAN games:D

I've been using Hamachi, but we would like to set it up as a permanent VPN. The problem is that my friend has a Openweb IS account and he cannot connect with that to Hamachi (international). He needs to use his @lantic account for international connections...

It would work him out better to connect through the local connction via VPN...*scratch my head*:)

and?

did you eventually find a solution? I am interested to know what you did...? Please let me know!

Nope, still not working :( I heard from someone with more knowledge that one person needs to install a VPN software app (by Netgear) to make the VPN work. Havn't tried it yet. Will let you guys know when I do and what it is :)

Your should be able to setup a a permanent IPSEC tunnel between the 2 routers - this will give you a permanent link. You need to then make sure you are both on different ip ranges (192.168.1.x for one of you and 192.168.0.x for the other is common). The setup a statis route on one of the modems saying 'route 192.168.0.x traffic through interface IPSEC_TUNNEL_1' and 'route 192.168.1.x traffic through interface IPSEC_TUNNEL_1' on the other. I don't have a DG834 any more but this is as far as I can remember all thats needed.

Have you done port forwading on the router for the Vpn??

Errr, yes...

Haven't tried anything else yet. We have tried your way, eabeukes. My IP range has been changed to 192.168.1.x and my friend's still has the default. Problem is it works, but we cannot use it for playing games nd such. Games won't see it over the different IP ranges.

Weird one.

yeah, or it might just be using protocols that cannot be routed. the game pc's should see each other through different subnets.
