There was no proof it was due to the base station nearby. It was like saying, I got cancer because the Koreans did an underground nuclear test.
Personally I want to stay right next to a base station. This will ensure that my own phone transmits 100 times less power during phone calls due to a good radio link. The biggest risk is your phone, not the base station. The signal reaching you from a base station, even at a few 10's of meters away is orders of magnitude less than what you are exposed to during a phone call from your own phone held against your head. And for THAT, there is no conclusive, laboratory repeatable evidence yet that it is a health risk.
How many complaints have there been about nearby high power UHF TV transmitters? These typically transmit anything from 10 kiloWatt (a cellular base station is about 40 W) to 500 MW and their frequencies can reach up to 800 MHz (GSM is 900 MHz).
Bring on those towers
