Living 800m LOS from an iBurst tower has always tended to give me a reasonably good ave latency locally.

NO MORE

While my 1st hop pings still look good my std deviations is now around 64ms!

Initially suspected the lightning from the other nite but iBurst recons no hassles on my tower - Randpark Ridge .... now, anyone else having this?

While I primarily use my link for work I enjoy the occasional FPS .. and it's now unplayable....

Is this simply a congestion issue in that their towers are at capacity or is it that they screwed with the shaping again ... any thoughts and comments?

Not experiencing similar problems myself, but reading this forum over the past few weeks, several problems related to Randburg Ridge basestation have been mentioned by various posters. Perhaps it is congestion, or perhaps there is a configuration problem on this specific BS.

The answer is simple, you're in JHB. ;) Your problem is probably caused by congestion of your tower. When they upgrade the towers, you shouldn't have a problem anymore. Keep your fingers crossed.

Until they oversubscribe them again

Rumour has it that they will upgrade the towers to 100mb instead of 20mb.
I personally don't beleive it anyways.

Well its not really rumor. Thats what iBurst themselves said.

It was in the whole press statement about going up to 2mb/s etc.. and that is true.

he said it was in the pipeline, so it could take a while but it makes sense, im sure it is their plan.

Seburn, it certainly will happen, it's just a matter of time. They will also upgrade their speed to 2mb/s, in addition to increasing their tower's capacity.

Whats the bet that IF they upgrade the speed to 2mbps that it'll be an extra charge and a different package.
From the posts here most people can't even reach the 1mbps speed so how are they going to manage to reach 2mbps?

As far as I'm concerned 1mbps is fast enough for a 3GB package, as it is I can wipe out that 3GB in the 1st day with ease.

Any idea when this upgrade will actually take place?
Northcliff tower's (lack of) speed is beginning to get to me...

So I'm not the only 1 having problems with the RandPark Ridge Tower, when I 1st got iburst a couple of months ago, speeds were always above 100KB/s but now it's barely above 70. Playing counterstrike on local server with a ping of 90 just aint cool :( & I'm also about Km from the tower...

Barely above 70kB/s? That's still at 560kb/s. For a congested tower like RR, it's a good speed, and STILL faster than ADSL.

You being salcastic right?

I've been connecting to Fourways (Indaba) Tower ever since I got iBurst (Jan 2005). I've always had excellent speeds with this tower. For the past 2 months i've had complete vomit speeds/connections. It took me jst under 5 mins for this page to load!!! I've had it with them, wish i had a simple solution to this problem.. :(

Can't get ADSL, iBurst is slower than dial-up, 3G is too expensive, what does that leave me with???? :(

Have you ever considered buying an external antenna? They usually help with your speeds. When Iburst upgrade their tower's capacity, you should have full speeds again. The most likely cause of your problem is high latency. What PING results do you get?

On iburst.co.za, i just got 1607ms!! Aint that a rocket speed!!!

Antenna doesnt work either, lent one my friends. Just improved signal strength - thats it, no difference in performance.

When can we expect this tower upgrade roughly??

I'm not sure, but it should be the same time that they upgrade their speed to 2mb/s. The current capacity for the towers is only 20mb/s. This will be increased to 100mb/s, allowing more users to use a specific tower, reducing latency levels. Thus, you will get better speeds once the upgrade is done.

I think atm a better option is to get them to put up a new tower in your area. They have done that a lot around JHB lately, with a extra one in the CBD, Kempton Park etc.

The 100mb/s upgrade thing should still take a long time, they have no time frame yet.

Hi,

Spoke to powers that be - the Randpark ridge tower is WELL within load limits... imo something has gone fubar on there.

Drove to the tower... utTraceStar showing -56 or so ... speed never got above 598kbps.

Tested external directional antenna from my home... no real difference. My modem does sometimes hunt to the new honeydew tower but from what I can see it's not the cause of the problems.

Randpark Ridge tower is NOT happiness. The fact that others have the same experience worries me.

I am 706m from the tower (gps'd from the base of the tower to home this morning). Signal around the -70 mark (cough) used to be FAR better when that tower 1st went live.

Hope Ed's reading this ;-)

2mb towers soon I strongly doubt it...

Upgrading of towers to increase access speeds to 2mb, this will only happen when it is absolutely necessary, look at the people they hire for their call centre, finance department, the guys doing their website, their PR company, list is endless – none of these represents a first world organisation that is service driven, trying to deliver the best possible service/product.

It’s more a case of we don’t really want to spend money and are more concerned about profits and our shareholders than anything else and we don’t give a damn about clients and their needs. They only react if they are forced, by threats of exposure to the media.

Now keeping the above in mind and reflecting on your own experience with iBurst and putting the media hype aside do you seriously think this company gives a rat’s ass about upgrading access speeds? It is called media spin.

I can understand that you might only want to consider a positive outcome as the truth might be disappointing. Best you take a stance of wait and see and not get your hopes up no matter what the CEO or any other representative of iBurst has to say.
