Do any suppliers have a sense of how long we will have to wait before the Wii hits our shores? That is, besides getting it shipped from abroad at crazy prices.

When I asked that question I got told "Between December and March"....

I haven't seen any other update since then

It is a crazy that there isn't a definitive date yet

from the nintendo website http://www.nintendo.co.za/NEWS.asp:

2006-09-20 Wii Launch information
Wii is set to revolutionise the face of gaming when it launches in Europe on 8th December 2006 (South Africa shortly thereafter.) At an estimated retail price of 249 Euros (£179 in the UK), bundled with Wii Sports.

Accompanying the console launch will be around 20 software titles including Wii Play and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and from third party publishers launch games include: Ubisoft’s RED STEEL, EA’s Need for Speed: Carbon, Activision’s Tony Hawk’s Downhill Jam, THQ’s Disney/ Pixar’s Cars and Sega’s Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz

@ Fudzy they are targetting a different market to Xbox and PS3.

Very different. Judging by the news articles going around they're doing well too. People are getting so involved in their games that they are letting go of their controllers... :D

Agreed, but they should charge accordingly. If they're not going to invest in new technology then where are they spending the money to justify the cost of the unit?

It doesn't even offer a DVD player in its native form.

It is the cheapest of the next gen consoles and offers a different game play.

Stop complaining and save up to get one. It is quite obvious from the worldwide success that it is not overpriced.

I need a Wii :)... Doesn't sound right

I couldn't give a damn about the technology - all I want is a decent gaming experience. The wiimote (or whatever they call the remote) may not have new technology, but is the most exciting development of the new generation of consoles (IMHO).

I already have a DVD player to play my DVDs, and I don't think I'll be rushing to upgrade to Blu-ray a la PS3 just yet.

Exciting development? Motion detection in a gamepad isn't anything new. About 10 years ago I had a Microsoft gamepad which did the exact same thing. It just seems a bit gimmicky, something which our friends in the East lap up like crazy.

fudzy : I highly doubt your MS gamepad was anything similar. It probably just had a six-axis tilt detection, like the PS3 has

ive had many many consoles, actually alot more like it,never once have i seen the wii gamepad on my previous consoles. Its a console not a PC remember that.

personally i dont think its a gimmick, its family orientated and meant to be fun. From a business point of view that remote would cost more to make than a normal remote as motion sensors dont come cheap do they?

It has accellerometers, linear motion detection and pointer detection

Well only time will tell if will revolutionize the game controller market or fade away as a failed gimmick like vr goggles & the all mighty powerglove, my money is on the latter.

Personally I think blu ray is more likely to fall into that latter category of yours than the Wii remote is.
