Hi

When using a nokia n70 as a modem and connecting through to the internet , i am connected via gprs ...How can i connect via 3g rather than gprs for a faster connection?

Thanks
NB

You can't, with the N70 you can't force it to work in 3G, the phone will switch between the two as it sees fit :p

Get yourself an N73 or N80 where you can force 3G ;)

Tools, Settings, Network, and change the setting under Network Mode to UMTS for 3G, GSM for GPRS, or Dual Mode so that the phone chooses which is the optimal connection. The N70 runs on Dual Mode, and more often than not the phone doesn't choose the optimal connection which normally drops your connection whn switching between the two.

I thought that the N73 shared the same OS as the N80, therefore it would have the same ability to force 3G

UMTS is listed under Network Mode on my N80 so I'm surprised that it's not on the N73 as well. Does it only show GSM and Dual Mode?

Maybe he has a Vlive version, those ones seem to have less "features" than the vanilla ones...

Thats pretty crap, i do have a Vlive version... So that means I have to remove the vlive version...

I didn't want the friggin meerkat

lol it may not be related to Vlive though, best to find out from somebody with a proper (non-vodafone branded) N73 whether or not they have UMTS as an option in the Network settings. It could be a problem across all N7x series phones. If that is the case then it's pretty crap not having the ability to use your R4000 phone as a 3G card.

For the record, I am not saying ALL Vlive versions have less features, at least my Vlive 6680 and my vanilla 6680 are the same. But I know of differences in the SE P990 and the Nokia 6233/6234.

I have the exact opposite problem.. my N80 only connects at 480.6 kbps and I don't really feel like being hit with a huge bill and wasting my GPRS package. I also can't find any pricing for 3G but assume that it's more expensive because it's faster.

So I assume that switching to GSM will ensure that my phone connects at GPRS speed rather than automatically selecting the 3G channel when I connect?

It sucks waiting for Telkom. But at least GPRS is cheap :D

No, 3G costs the same as GPRS. By all means, keep your phone on 3G only and surf as you please. You will obviously use up your bundle faster as you will be able to access more pages in the same time compared to using only GPRS.
