ESKOM today announced that Jacob Maroga has been appointed CEO designate of the power utility to replace Thulani Gcabashe who has served two terms as CE.
The announcement was made today by Eskom Holdings Limited board chairman Valli Moosa in a statement.
The cabinet yesterday endorsed the board’s recommendation to appoint Maroga and the decision was announced to Eskom senior management this morning by Public Enterprises Minister Alec Erwin.
Gcabashe indicated at the time of accepting his second term in 2004 that he would not be available to extend his contract for a third term - at the end of this year.
Maroga was the unanimous recommendation of the board after an eight-month selection process. More than 270 candidates were identified. Five candidates were short-listed.
Maroga joined Eskom in 1995 as the distribution technology manager. He moved on to engineering manager in the northern and north eastern regions of distribution before being appointed to the executive committee as MD of the distribution division in September 2000.
Moosa said that Gcabashe had served with distinction and had demonstrated "extraordinary skill, grace and courage" during a challenging period of transformation.
The R97bn capacity expansion programme currently underway would stand as "a monument to his perseverance and leadership" said Moosa.
Moosa noted that the board would like to thank the search committee - chaired by himself - including Gcabashe, Mpho Makwana, Zee Cele, Wendy Lucas-Bull and Rand Merchant Bank’s Laurie Dippenaar.
Moosa said the date for the official hand over by the current chief executive to the chief executive designate "will be announced in due course".
"The board extends its congratulations to Jacob Maroga and wishes him every success in the years ahead," said Moosa.
