Hi!!

I'm trying to set up a lan on the mega100wr router supplied in the telkom plan 5 package, Using a desktop PC(on an ethernet connection) and a laptop(on a wi-fi connection).I can access internet via both machines. But I thought it might be possible to set up a lan on both machines preferably peer to peer. I would like to acces the one drive from the other Pc/laptop.

Is it possible to do so I think one can cause while tinkering I could see the laptop directories from the PC but not the Pc from the laptop. Is this perhaps due to Panda(antivirus). I'm a semi noob so fuller explanation would be preferred.

I'll prob call the delightfuls at telkom? But I'd rather get a straight answer.

I've set up the following on the router:
1) DHCP - Dynamic Ip assignment thingy
2) WPA-SPK - The Wireless protocol - String protected something or other
3) Mac address filter list or whatever it's called where you only allow certain MAC addresses on the network.
(Think I've covered all the security bases there. Can't do WEP when WPA is assigned or I don't know how to)

I've set up the following on the PC/Laptop (both Win XP laptop can't install SP2, no space):
1) Allow Dynamic IP Adresses

That's about all I can see to set unless I've missed something. I scanned the manual but didn't see much useful stuff on LAN setup. Also visited windows document sections who tell me to install SP2 on the laptop.

mmm, i had a similar problem and the way i solved it was setting the DHCP IP Address range to start at 10.0.0.3. not 10.0.0.1. for some reason that worked. can anyone explain?

Another device on the network with fixed IP?

well the router is set to 10.0.0.2. the first PC receives 10.0.0.1 fine, but the second PC wasn't assigned 10.0.0.3. maybe a bug.

anyway, the hack works so why question it. :)

That interesting Gaz. in all my testing, the second PC is always assigned 10.0.0.3. what was your second PC assigned ? and after you changed the DHCP range to start at 10.0.0.3, then what IP did the 2 PCs get assigned ?

Before the change, the second PC wasn't accesible (it was a wireless laptop) and didn't receive an IP address via DHCP, but after i changed the range to >.3, the first PC was .3 and the laptop .4. But who knows, i could be doing something stupid, but it works.

Ok the exact same thing happened to me I also figured the 10.0.0.3 thing out no biggie.

The thing is the router is assigned as 10.0.0.2 and the DHCP function assigns the values in accending order so first computer get 10.0.0.1 and the second 10.0.0.2 and the router thinks haey wait thats me. Now while the router gets obsessed with itself it doesn't resolve the IP of the second device. That part is all fine.

My question still remains how do you set up the LAN stufff cause niether comp is talking to the other?

Thanks in advance for your help

Gaz it seems like you have the exact same setup as what I do could you please tell me if you can see your desktop drives vian the laptop or not?

Do you think maybe I should assign a fixed IP address to everything?

SHow us details from ipconfig run on both machines....

start>run>cmd>ipconfig

Then let us know if you can ping the ip address of each machine from the other

start>run>cmd>ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Try and make the host names different? Eg doug and doug_laptoy. Stop all other systray type progs while testing, eg firewall, virus stuff. Enable again when u got it running.

Ok killed all systray stuff and it all links now(ping works work groups also set up to the same and set up my wireless SSID to the same name as the work group for good measure) Thanks everyone; You All Rock. (The second comp was actually called albert a typo there sorry).

Ok. I disabled everything with the word fire/firewall in it. You say I must now re initiate it all and work it from there is there a way to assign allowable PC's on the win firewall settings. Also I saw a win help file recommending I disable TCP/IP file sharing and installing the IPX/SPX protocol for this purpose, is this wise?

I see on the web alot of others had this problem too but only saw the forums with the correct info now now go figure.Guess I googled the wrong keywords till now.

You nered to enable file and print sharing. Dont bother with IPX. Restart your firewall things one at a time to see which causes the problems. In yourwindowes firewall thing make sure file and printer sharing is enabled in the exceptions list. Hope that helps.

Now does anyone know how to get bridging working on this box?? Im trying to get two networks talking and not having much luck..a 192 network and a 10 one on the two lan ports...
