Mass renaming for Durban

The eThekwini Municipality yesterday proposed renaming 150 major roads and 37 buildings and installations in the second phase of a controversial renaming process.
Name changes have been proposed for most major thoroughfares in the central business district and major suburbs from Umhlanga to Amanzimtoti and Berea to Hillcrest. Freeways and highways will also be renamed.
The city hall will be known as the Mabhida Building and Durban Exhibition Centre as Treasure House. Westridge Stadium is likely to be called the Tap Tap Makhathini Stadium.
Smith Street will be renamed Moses Mabhida Street and West Street Emakheni Street, while Pine Street will become Jabu Khanyile Street.
Major suburban thoroughfares will also undergo name changes, with Umgeni Road becoming Mathews Meyiwa Road, Essenwood Road becoming Stephen Dlamini and Musgrave Road changing to Walter Sisulu Road. Umhlanga Rocks Drive will be named after Beyers Naude, Currie Road after Adelaide Tambo and Davenport Road after Helen Joseph
The right to vote is not the only activity that signifies a liberated people, but includes the removal of all signs that undermine, and cause pain to the majority of the people. There can be no lasting reconciliation if the majority still feels humiliated, frustrated and denigrated daily, calling or referring to names that carry a stigma,” the city’s statement said.
The municipality said it understands concerns about the costs involved in replacing signs and letterheads but said the renaming of streets and other municipal infrastructure is one of the transitional activities that has to take place.
