This YouTUBEd episode is great.

Quick summary: Global warming not the most immediate problem, may not be a problem at all. Al Gore lied - and that's an inconvenient truth.

I love the quickie that shows the 1997 "Gore Standard" - The USA refuses to ratify the Kyoto Protocol until China are included. This standard was also used by Bush but when Gore says it, it's prudent; when Bush says it, he is evil beyond doubt.

Gotta love lefties, free entertainment at it's best, except when they are targeting and killing YOU, then it's the curse of the fatal death. (Don't forget, NAZIs and communists were lefties).

As for science relevance, the scientists are being shut out by the global warming religionists.

I'd love to watch it but telkom is in control. Not going to use that much bandwidth. Do they give an alternate explanation to what is causing the environmental changes which are occurring fast and increasing at quite a rate? Why don't they believe in the effect of greenhouse gases etc?

can someone please summarize it for us people lacking uncapped connections? :P

Praeses, I'd love to summarize it for you but I don't think I could do it justice. It's around 70MB in total.

Nazis were RIGHT wingers, not left wingers.

Take your pointless political snipes somewhere else. Just because you have issues with the 'left' doesn't mean you should force the rest of us to sit through your pointless rants.

On topic : Frankly I hope everyone ratifies the Kyoto protocol. However, it's true that we have more immediate (but perhaps not as species threatening) problems to deal with. Overpopulation and plain old destruction of enviromental habitats come to mind.

Humans cause 2% of global warming. Termites have a bigger effect on global warming than humans. Please people, look at the stats. Don't be so influenced by opposition parties who just want people's votes! To suggest that humans create global warming and that there is something that we can do about it is crazy.

Global Warming is not due to human contribution of Carbon Dioxide Global Warming: The Cold said:
Global Warming, as we think we know it, doesn't exist. And I am not the only one trying to make people open up their eyes and see the truth. But few listen, despite the fact that I was one of the first Canadian Ph.Ds. in Climatology and I have an extensive background in climatology, especially the reconstruction of past climates and the impact of climate change on human history and the human condition. Few listen, even though I have a Ph.D, (Doctor of Science) from the University of London, England and was a climatology professor at the University of Winnipeg. For some reason (actually for many), the World is not listening. Here is why.

What would happen if tomorrow we were told that, after all, the Earth is flat? It would probably be the most important piece of news in the media and would generate a lot of debate. So why is it that when scientists who have studied the Global Warming phenomenon for years say that humans are not the cause nobody listens? Why does no one acknowledge that the Emperor has no clothes on?

Believe it or not, Global Warming is not due to human contribution of Carbon Dioxide (CO2). This in fact is the greatest deception in the history of science. We are wasting time, energy and trillions of dollars while creating unnecessary fear and consternation over an issue with no scientific justification. For example, Environment Canada brags about spending $3.7 billion in the last five years dealing with climate change almost all on propaganda trying to defend an indefensible scientific position while at the same time closing weather stations and failing to meet legislated pollution targets.

No sensible person seeks conflict, especially with governments, but if we don't pursue the truth, we are lost as individuals and as a society. That is why I insist on saying that there is no evidence that we are, or could ever cause global climate change. And, recently, Yuri A. Izrael, Vice President of the United Nations sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) confirmed this statement. So how has the world come to believe that something is wrong?

Maybe for the same reason we believed, 30 years ago, that global cooling was the biggest threat: a matter of faith. "It is a cold fact: the Global Cooling presents humankind with the most important social, political, and adaptive challenge we have had to deal with for ten thousand years. Your stake in the decisions we make concerning it is of ultimate importance; the survival of ourselves, our children, our species," wrote Lowell Ponte in 1976.

I was as opposed to the threats of impending doom global cooling engendered as I am to the threats made about Global Warming. Let me stress I am not denying the phenomenon has occurred. The world has warmed since 1680, the nadir of a cool period called the Little Ice Age (LIA) that has generally continued to the present. These climate changes are well within natural variability and explained quite easily by changes in the sun. But there is nothing unusual going on.

Since I obtained my doctorate in climatology from the University of London, Queen Mary College, England my career has spanned two climate cycles. Temperatures declined from 1940 to 1980 and in the early 1970's global cooling became the consensus. This proves that consensus is not a scientific fact. By the 1990's temperatures appeared to have reversed and Global Warming became the consensus. It appears I'll witness another cycle before retiring, as the major mechanisms and the global temperature trends now indicate a cooling.

No doubt passive acceptance yields less stress, fewer personal attacks and makes career progress easier. What I have experienced in my personal life during the last years makes me understand why most people choose not to speak out; job security and fear of reprisals. Even in University, where free speech and challenge to prevailing wisdoms are supposedly encouraged, academics remain silent.

I once received a three page letter that my lawyer defined as libellous, from an academic colleague, saying I had no right to say what I was saying, especially in public lectures. Sadly, my experience is that universities are the most dogmatic and oppressive places in our society. This becomes progressively worse as they receive more and more funding from governments that demand a particular viewpoint.

In another instance, I was accused by Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki of being paid by oil companies. That is a lie. Apparently he thinks if the fossil fuel companies pay you have an agenda. So if Greenpeace, Sierra Club or governments pay there is no agenda and only truth and enlightenment?

Personal attacks are difficult and shouldn't occur in a debate in a civilized society. I can only consider them from what they imply. They usually indicate a person or group is losing the debate. In this case, they also indicate how political the entire Global Warming debate has become. Both underline the lack of or even contradictory nature of the evidence.

I am not alone in this journey against the prevalent myth. Several well-known names have also raised their voices. Michael Crichton, the scientist, writer and filmmaker is one of them. In his latest book, "State of Fear" he takes time to explain, often in surprising detail, the flawed science behind Global Warming and other imagined environmental crises.

Another cry in the wildenerness is Richard Lindzen's. He is an atmospheric physicist and a professor of meteorology at MIT, renowned for his research in dynamic meteorology - especially atmospheric waves. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has held positions at the University of Chicago, Harvard University and MIT. Linzen frequently speaks out against the notion that significant Global Warming is caused by humans. Yet nobody seems to listen.

I think it may be because most people don't understand the scientific method which Thomas Kuhn so skilfully and briefly set out in his book "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions." A scientist makes certain assumptions and then produces a theory which is only as valid as the assumptions. The theory of Global Warming assumes that CO2 is an atmospheric greenhouse gas and as it increases temperatures rise. It was then theorized that since humans were producing more CO2 than before, the temperature would inevitably rise. The theory was accepted before testing had started, and effectively became a law.

As Lindzen said many years ago: "the consensus was reached before the research had even begun." Now, any scientist who dares to question the prevailing wisdom is marginalized and called a sceptic, when in fact they are simply being good scientists. This has reached frightening levels with these scientists now being called climate change denier with all the holocaust connotations of that word. The normal scientific method is effectively being thwarted.

Meanwhile, politicians are being listened to, even though most of them have no knowledge or understanding of science, especially the science of climate and climate change. Hence, they are in no position to question a policy on climate change when it threatens the entire planet. Moreover, using fear and creating hysteria makes it very difficult to make calm rational decisions about issues needing attention.

Until you have challenged the prevailing wisdom you have no idea how nasty people can be. Until you have re-examined any issue in an attempt to find out all the information, you cannot know how much misinformation exists in the supposed age of information.

I was greatly influenced several years ago by Aaron Wildavsky's book "Yes, but is it true?" The author taught political science at a New York University and realized how science was being influenced by and apparently misused by politics. He gave his graduate students an assignment to pursue the science behind a policy generated by a highly publicised environmental concern. To his and their surprise they found there was little scientific evidence, consensus and justification for the policy. You only realize the extent to which Wildavsky's findings occur when you ask the question he posed. Wildavsky's students did it in the safety of academia and with the excuse that it was an assignment. I have learned it is a difficult question to ask in the real world, however I firmly believe it is the most important question to ask if we are to advance in the right direction.

and farting cows  hehe

So, does methane pose a threat today? Let us review the situation. We know there are extensive methane hydrate and permafrost deposits all around the world. We have evidence that we are at the beginning of a period of global warming that is probably being made worse by the continuing build up of CO2 in the atmosphere due to fossil fuel burning. Recent computer modelling incorporating the feed back effects of global warming that has already occurred suggests that by about 2050 we may start to loose the beneficial effects of the Amazon rain forest as a carbon sink. This could lead to temperature rises of 5 to 8 degrees centigrade by 2100. This would be uncharted territory and no one really knows at present how the world's environmental systems would change but we now have the evidence from the geological past. On the basis of this evidence global warming can lead to methane releases which once started would escalate. This would be the worst possible thing to happen because once started there would be no way of stopping a runaway methane global warming event. We CAN reduce our CO2 emissions from fossil fuels but we COULD NOT reduce methane emissions once they started, huge natural forces would take over and change our world. This would probably result in the melting of the Antarctic icecap which would raise sea levels by 50 metres and would completely change the climates of the world.

Ball is a Canadian climate change skeptic and was previously a "scientific advisor" to the oil industry-backed organization, Friends of Science. [4] Ball is a member of the Board of Research Advisors of the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, a Canadian free-market think tank which is predominantly funded by foundations and corporations. [5]

Strange.. an oil guy who disputes the scientific consensus that we are causing global warming.

@Louis Mostert

Could you please post the link for the "Global Warming is not due to human contribution of Carbon Dioxide" article?

Thanks.

Of course they'll tell you that they make sacrifices like driving around in "green" cars yet they all have SUVs and super cars as well as other energy guzzling privileges of wealth. Just like poverty which they claim to fight yet own many massive mansions with multiple rooms, eat ridiculously expensive caviar and send their pets to special pet hotels with beds, T.V and chef. Probably while they visit the poor starving ‘dark ones' for publicity and that pathetic organization called the U.N where they like to hobnob.

I was actually just on my way to my Clifton home in my Murcielago. I stopped in at Thrupps to buy some caviar, and while I was waiting in the queue, I checked the forum on my N95 and saw your post.
That's an excellent summary of all liberals.

You can always just ignore him or do you have a problem with Freedom of Speech
When that 'freedom' is used to start political discussions in the science section, then yes, I have a problem with it.

If you have a problem with my problem, take it to N&CA.

The 4 stages of Global Warming Denial

1. Global Warming doesn't exist. It's not happening.

2. Okay, it's happening, but humans are not causing it.

3. Okay, humans are causing it, but there's nothing we can do about it, we can't go back to the stone age, it would ruin our economy, it's worse to act than not to act, etc.

4. Okay, it is possible with technology, efficiency/conservation and smart planning to do something about it, but it's going to hurt the bottom line of "dirty" corporations.

Clearly, some of our forumites are in Stage 2. Nevertheless, there is scientific consensus that we are causing global warming.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) states unequivocally that the consensus of scientific opinion is that Earth's climate is being affected by human activities: 'Human activities ... are modifying the concentration of atmospheric constituents ... that absorb or scatter radiant energy. ... [M]ost of the observed warming over the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations' IPCC is not alone in its conclusions. In recent years, all major scientific bodies in the United States whose members' expertise bears directly on the matter have issued similar statements. [...]

That hypothesis was tested by analyzing 928 abstracts, published in refereed scientific journals between 1993 and 2003, and listed in the ISI database with the keywords "climate change" (9).

The 928 papers were divided into six categories: explicit endorsement of the consensus position, evaluation of impacts, mitigation proposals, methods, paleoclimate analysis, and rejection of the consensus position. Of all the papers, 75% fell into the first three categories, either explicitly or implicitly accepting the consensus view; 25% dealt with methods or paleoclimate, taking no position on current anthropogenic climate change. Remarkably, none of the papers disagreed with the consensus position. [...]

This analysis shows that scientists publishing in the peer-reviewed literature agree with IPCC, the National Academy of Sciences, and the public statements of their professional societies. Politicians, economists, journalists, and others may have the impression of confusion, disagreement, or discord among climate scientists, but that impression is incorrect.

I have not checked out the Doci on YouTube... but I think it was the one that was on Brit TV a while back and has been debated a good deal, one of the things pointed out is that population and pollution etc did not have a relation to global warming, however on checking the research figures it was found that the Window period used was a good thirty years short, which if it had been included would have shown that this was the case, ie that people were a prime cause of the problem.

To say that we have not caused climate change seems to me a bit misinformed, I remember a while back a similar debate about CFCs and the Ozone layer, which went on for a good while until a few Japanese scientists proved conclusively that this was indeed the major cause.

There is another climate change that has occurred, global dimming... I would recommend that anyone that is not familiar with it looks it up. There has been a lot of experiments done to check the validity of Global dimming, and if you bear in mind that this factor causes a drop in temperatures, then we should be a lot hotter that what we are now, THEREFORE the increase in temperatures or Global Warming is more certainly a result or been made greater by human actions. It is that simple, the conclusions about Global warming were wrong because of information left out, for example Global Dimming, again if you have not heard about it, it is well worth looking up

Global dimming presents a problem in its self, if you were to cut down on your emissions and the atmosphere became clearer, then temperatures will go up. The Melting of the Ice caps is one thing, but this has not been the worry, the main worry is the ice that forms on mountains, this is the main source of your rivers, and what is happing is that this ice is becoming very much less, you water flow from rivers is going to become erratic, which with an increasing world population, is not a good idea

*sigh* There is NO global warming swindle. Stop wasting your time people. Here's the word again consensus. This means that the scientific community agrees that we're causing global warming. People who claim otherwise are rogue theorists a la Mr Mbeki saying HIV doesn't cause AIDS.

@BlueCollar,

The video I posted is called: "Exposed: The Climate of Fear" and is not the video "The Great Global Warming Swindle" which is also a very good video.

PS. Can you prove your consensus? These two videos actually debunk the consensus myth. My own research on Google and other sites seems to debunk the "consensus" as well so I am well satisfied that the consensus story is bunk. YMMV.

And, accordingly, I will state that it is now well understood, and agreed, within the paleoclimatalogical circles, that CO2 levels follow increased heat, by as much as 500 years and that some speculate that CO2 could actually lead to global cooling.

And now that I have parried and thrusted, I await your response.

Adieu

From my previous link:

The consensus on climate change.

Created in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environmental Programme, IPCC's purpose is to evaluate the state of climate science as a basis for informed policy action, primarily on the basis of peer-reviewed and published scientific literature (3). In its most recent assessment, IPCC states unequivocally that the consensus of scientific opinion is that Earth's climate is being affected by human activities: "Human activities ... are modifying the concentration of atmospheric constituents ... that absorb or scatter radiant energy. ... [M]ost of the observed warming over the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations"

IPCC is not alone in its conclusions. In recent years, all major scientific bodies in the United States whose members' expertise bears directly on the matter have issued similar statements. For example, the National Academy of Sciences report, Climate Change Science: An Analysis of Some Key Questions, begins: "Greenhouse gases are accumulating in Earth's atmosphere as a result of human activities, causing surface air temperatures and subsurface ocean temperatures to rise" [p. 1 in (5)]. The report explicitly asks whether the IPCC assessment is a fair summary of professional scientific thinking, and answers yes: "The IPCC's conclusion that most of the observed warming of the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations accurately reflects the current thinking of the scientific community on this issue"

Others agree. The American Meteorological Society (6), the American Geophysical Union (7), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) all have issued statements in recent years concluding that the evidence for human modification of climate is compelling (8).
