Problems with International Forums/Sites (Resolved)

It's a pleasure Grav!ty, I'm not that clued up with everything, but I do know some things work for me.

If you don't mind me asking, which browser are you using? The first release of Internet Explorer 7 gave me some trouble on an international forum. It would forget me and won't have me stay logged in.

If you are using IE, try to switch to firefox as well.

www.firefox.com

It may make a difference ;)

Cool ;) I hope it works. I live near the Kruger Park, most of my internet troubles are telscum related, so I know how you feel :p

I'm running Vista primarily, it's not that XP didn't do it for me, but I like the newest software :p ;)

I don't think it's an IE problem. The reason is that FF only imports the bookmarks and stuff from IE, so it's not really as if it could transfer the problem over.

Did you configure the DNS settings on the NIC or on the router? I know that if you are connecting straight from the router, except from a manual PPPOE connection, the only way it's going to work is if you configure the router's DNS settings.

OpenDNS says to configure the router and switch it off and on (restart), after you've configured.

They say to restart the pc as well. I'm using the FasterFox extension today, with the OpenDNS servers and the dsl-cache proxy, and my browsing is flying ;)

I'm out of idea's at this moment, maybe someone else has some words :p

Ciao man

Nothing I've tried so far has helped in any way. I'm convinced it's a DNS server or proxy cache issue though, as it was a combination of those that fixed it the first time around when this occured about 18 months ago.

I'm sad to hear that man ;)

If you failed here, try again man. Head over to http://forums.techguy.org/

It's a busy forum, It's not such fun as myadsl, but I have received some help there in the past.

Ciao man :p

try this proxy:
cache.saix.net port 3128

seems to fix all the transparent proxy issues for me.

I missed this thread, don't know why, but I have exactly the same problem. I was blaming the Telkom Mega 100WR as I couldn't see any other common component, but the suggestion of transparent proxies sounds very likely.

As I stated (in detail :)) in my thread, I only have the prob on phpbb boards and I know they use cookies - perhaps your ip-board example works in a similar way. Also I can use those forums fine via my 3G connection or from work.

I am tempted to do a trace of what happens in the working and the non-working cases.

Is there a definitive way of seeing if there's a transparent proxy in your path?

Telkom. I'm using a 3 GB shaped ISP account at the moment on a 384 kbps line. Worked fine till 9 May when this issue came up. I don't necessarily want to change ISP's because I've made good use of the "averaging" system in the past :)

I guess I could try another for a month or so to see if there's any difference but don't want to change and find myself tied to a contract for 12 months with the same issue unresolved by using another.

Can you suggest an ISP?

I did have a Tiscali account for a while, I think before they were taken over by MWeb but it was used by a friend for the entire 12 month contract period except for some messing around I did with it to check it out. Their support sucks or sucked at the time anyway. When it came to cancelling the account it took forever for them to get it right.

As a test, you could buy 1GB of prepaid access from WebAfrica in order to see if it solves the problem... It will cost you R70, and if it doesn't work, you can always keep in in reserve in case you get capped.

I'm beginning to think that it may be the firewall in your router. Have you tried to use an alternative router?

At the risk of sounding as uninformed as I probably am - I had the same type of problem as the original poster when we upgraded our BB to a new software version. Problem was finally solved by clearing all cookies in my system, both through Firefox and manually in the Temp Internet folder.

Not the router ;) It's actually a Telscum router, but it's manufactured by Billion, it's a Billion 5102G.

The reason I say it's not the router, I've got the exact same one. :p ;)

@Grav!ty: Setting an explicit proxy has fixed it for me.

Woo hoo. I've set my proxy to cache.saix.net:8080 and so far so good.

Other proxies suggested but not tried yet: cache.saix.net:3128 and dsl-cache.saix.net:8080.

I didn't clear any cookies.

Yes, cache.saix.net not dsl-cache.saix.net.

Web Africa have after hours support! It would have been my next step to go to them and say "you're reselling SAIX bandwidth to me - please ask them to fix this".

Getting into some details now (well, a rumour of details because I didn't copy them down): I used http://www.blockstatus.com/ip-proxy-detector and http://www.proxydetect.com/ to see what was going on. (I can't check the details now because the client site blocks access ... and MTN has stolen my remaining data bundle :().

One of them reported two IP addresses. That's just the kind of thing that could mess up some cookie-using web-site logic. Also, it's the kind of thing that could feasibly be fixed in a transparent proxy server.

There's no use changing ISP's if you're using SAIX bandwidth - it's all the same.

You're a star SecretCode :)

cache.saix.net on port 8080 and 196.43.42.190 as Primary DNS with 196.43.38.190 as Secondary has done it and I'm back to my full spamming glory at www.pro-networks.org :p

good news.

Maybe worthwhile telling TelkomInternet about the issue with the transparent proxy... which is more like a translucent proxy it seems.

/me beams
*is a star*

I agree on telling TelkomInternet/SAIX about the issue but I'd like to have some more to say first. I anticipate a "don't understand this, leave it until they give up" reaction....

Update: The clever people at Web Africa have this in their knowledge base:
Problem/Summary
I log onto certain sites successfully but then get kicked off because I am "not connecting from the IP address I logged in from"?

Cause
In SA, if you are using a SAIX Telkom line to access the Internet, the ADSL service uses a transparent proxy-server farm for all International access. This farm of proxy servers helps reduces the international bandwidth bottleneck problems we have. These proxy servers report their own IP address for the web requests. This means that when you download a page, the return address given to the web server is in fact the address of the proxy server. The server in turn sends this page back to you for your viewing. The reason this is called "transparent" is because you don"t have to do anything specific to utilise this service and it is supposed to be seamlessly integrated.

Unfortunately, because every request goes through a different proxy server, some sites which use the IP address for extra security will deny you access when you try to navigate away from the page where you logged in.

Resolution
Use a specific proxy server instead. Please refer to the proxy server tutorial.
Despite the different error message, this sounds like exactly the problem Grav!ty and I have been experiencing. So (1) it may not be a fault with any specific proxy or the transparent approach itself, but with having proxy farms. (I'm they can do something better with it though.) And (2) ... I shoulda gone straight to WA for a solution!
