Hey guys,

I switched from DSL 384 to Iburst 2 weeks ago. Long story but hellkom couldnt upgrade my exchange to more than 384 kbps and my line lost sync to the exchange every 5 minutes. My problem post here: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=38365&page=2.

I have the desktop Iburst modem which works 100% through my desktop PC connected through CAT5 (not USB). I am now trying to hook up another desktop and another notebook to the internet by using my previous ADSL modem (Marconi 4-port router) to do it. I wasnt sure it would work, but hooked it up to my main pc first (cat5 from Iburst modem to 4th network port of marconi, and cat5 from 3rd network port of marconi to main pc). This worked fine and I could connect to the internet. I then tried to hook up the second desktop first by using CAT5 from second pc NIC to second router port.

Doing this, I could see the second pc files through windows explorer from the main pc, but the second PC just wont connect to the internet, no matter what I do.

Here is the 2 PC settings:

Main PC
LAN
IP 10.0.0.4
Subnet 255.0.0.0
Gateway 10.0.0.2

Iburst
IP 41.208.*.*
Subnet 255.255.255.255
Gateway 41.208.*.*

Second PC
IP 10.0.0.5
Subnet 255.0.0.0
Gateway 10.0.0.2

I havent even tried the notebook through wireless 10k on marconi router before I soreted out the second pc.

Any comments or advise will be appreciated.

Please help.

Too bad you got yourself a modem/router combo.

Couldn't you just use ICS on the PC which has the connection working? It is a bit weird as you'd be sharing to the same connection that you recieve the internet from, I'm not sure what Windows will do..

I'm sure theres another way which I just can't remember, hope someone else can help you out.

Thanks for replying.

No, the modem/router was one I got free with 2yr contract from hellkom for ADSL. (yeah I know).

I want to get the Iburst connection through a wireless router for wireless notebook support.

I read somewhere about bridged-mode for the router. Apparently theres a setting through the router software, not sure what it is exactly. I will give it a try too.

Cant find much info on this issue ANYWHERE.

If you guys don't know, then I dont know who else to ask or where else to look, the Iburst Support site seems pretty restricted.

Not for nothing they put the Ethernet connector there you know :p

No, that's NOT going to work - small problem of not being able to get the "RJ45" (hint, it's not) connector from the UTD into the WAN port of said router, being as it's built for the significantly smaller phone jack (we'll call it an RJ11 for the hell of it)

I wasnt sure it would work, but hooked it up to my main pc first (cat5 from Iburst modem to 4th network port of marconi, and cat5 from 3rd network port of marconi to main pc). This worked fine and I could connect to the internet.
Yep, this works fine, 'doze doesn't care that the UTD's CAT5 is directly jacked into its own socket, seeing as the fact of a network switch is transparent to the machine.

Actually, as long as you keep the 'net connection open from the one PC then no, it wouldn't - it's that pesky UTD-not-connected-to-the-WAN-port thing. BUT ..if you set 2nd PC up for iBurst-over-Ethernet the same way that you have the 1st one you'll magically (or should) be able to connect, just like on the 1st pc.

I havent even tried the notebook through wireless 10k on marconi router before I soreted out the second pc.

Notebook is just another client machine on the router/AP ..it's getting an IP off it too, only it gets it over WLAN.

Actually, until/unless you get a router that *can* take the RJ45 into its WAN port this isn't going to go away. So, the don't-spend-money solution is, as previously suggested, to setup ICS on the one desktop and let the 'net-love happen on the other 2 machines that way.

...only you now have a problem: there can be only one  - DHCP server that is. You're going to have to tell the Marconi router to either NOT be DHCP server (likely the better option) or to be a DHCP relay, off 192.168.0.1. And the reason for that is, IIRC, that's the IP address 'doze sets itself to when it's being an ICS host.

Of course this means that you'll have to make changes to the Macaroni ;) router and the PC you'll now have to keep on all/any time you want 'net on the other 2 machines but it does at least mean that you should achieve your objective. The good news is that the other 2 machines get to remain unchanged - DHCP clients on the network.

I appreciate your slightly sarcastic, yet informative reply. Would it not have been easier to say: BUY A NETGEAR WIRELESS ROUTER!

I do not want to go the ICS route. I want to be able to connect any one of my two laptops wirelessly without depending on another PC being ON.

Now, which wireless router would be the best, ie. max range, reliable, easy to use, cheap (yeah , I know).

Basically anything... Netgear and Linksys are good, Netgears Rangemax series for range, but see if you will need it first, most routers cover almost all around a normal house.

There was a problem with Belkin routers, being that you couldn't set the MTU which is crucial, but most routers can.

You could recommend plenty of models... just look around and see whats available.

Thanks. I will look around and post a few I find and ask your opinion on them. Price is ofcourse an issue.

If you had asked a question that could have been answered that way, sure - spend the damn money and be done with it already. But
Any comments or advise will be appreciated.
invited exactly what I did - and I happened to read your request as NOT wanting to spend money. Bottom line: ask the a good question to get a good answer.

I have what I believe to be insightful commentary on brands here, but I've lost interest.

Netgear Router

Can you please (or anyone else) suggest a good WAN 4port router?

Good Speed & Range - Ave price for the previously mentioned...

Read here http://www.netgear.com/Products/Rou...axNEXTWirelessRoutersandGateways/WNR854T.aspx

R 1 650

and you will need this to benefit from the increased wireless speed...

http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adapters/RangeMaxNextWirelessAdapters/WN511T.aspx

R 786

For slower 108 Mbps

go here

http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/RangeMaxWirelessRoutersandGateways/WPN824.aspx

R 820

Using both with iBurst, no issues... (Besides the iBurst issue!)

Thanks for the suggestions.

PCMCIA:

Looks very impressive:
http://www.netgear.com/Products/Adapters/RangeMaxNextWirelessAdapters/WN511T.aspx
Price: R682.00 at Sybaritic

I currently have:
http://www.netgear.com/Home/Products/Adapters/SuperGWirelessAdapters/WG511T.aspx
at 108 Mbps
which is WAY fast for me as the marconi router was only 11 Mbps.

ROUTER:

WNR854T - Cool but expensive. Best price I could find: R1,618.98

WPN824 - Should also be fine. Best price: R828.64

Problem is I need a router (switch) with CAT5 (utp) ports as well as being wireless.

Any ideas?

good router.... personally I haven't tried the route via the dsl router to get wireless connection but here's a suggestion:

wouldn't it work if you plugged the iburst via UTD to the dsl connection and connect with the dsl router to iburst's network (PPPoE) such that your dsl becomes the bridge to the WAN and acting as a wireless connection?

Decided to look at R800+ range of 108 Mbps routers:

Cannot find Linksys with 108 Mbps, only 54. but why?
Does is make such a big difference in speed? I found this good article and answered my own question:
http://cws.internet.com/article/3317-.htm

Here is one I found with 54 Mbps:
http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/shop/product.asp?StockID=101940

Found mixed reviews about the Netgear 824 at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-Range...4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1180526985&sr=8-1
Seems the blue light is a real pain.

I believe I only need 54 Mbps wireless.

Do you guys still recommend the Netgear? or is some of the other equally good. I am leaning towards the D-Link because of price.

You get what you pay for... Netgear WPN824v2 is fine (updated firmware & light can be switched off once you found the best placement) using it at present in combination with Netgear WNR854T. If you are in Cape Town I can get it for you delivered at the previously mentioned price. The WGT624v2 is fine non MIMO, compact & best buy for price...

Thanks, so you are saying that I should connect the Iburst modem to the main pc USB port instead of nic?

Do you know if this product is available/supported locally?

Download the 14 day trial version from that url and run it as trial to do tests to see if it will work with the iBurst modem.

According to that website it does work with other USB modems but I have not tried doing that myself with the iBurst modem.

EDIT: you have a PM

They also state this on their site:
----------------
"If you know of a device which is not in the list but works fine with USB to Ethernet Connector, please, let us know and get a free license in return!"
----------------

If it works you'll score a free licensed version of the program so you have nothing to lose.:D
