Telkom are now offering 512kbps WiMax with 3GB for R479.

iburst -
play package -
1500MB @ R420
+1000MB booster @ R250
+500MB booster @ R189
= 3000MB @ R859

pro package -
3500MB @ R599
effectively 3000MB @ R513

Considering that iburst shape p2p to death and that I average only ~400kbps on iburst this means that iBurst has fallen behind Telkom?

Shameful.

I think they know very well that the softcap is whats keeping a lot of customers with iBurst.

If they ever decide to remove the softcap thats the day many including myself make other arrangements.

Bingo.

With TelkomInternet you will generally get 2x your cap. And access to email & banking after your cap. And because you can choose your ISP, you can top up at R50-R70 per gig.

Iburst are going to have to think hard about this.

Yes smaller wisps like Aerosat will also have to rethink their pathetic 64k @ R300.

Whilst it's uncapped it's really a pathetic offering. The next package ie 192kb/s cost R495 almost double that of 64k.

Cant wait for WiMax to reach PE i'll be switching to the dobroadband option @512k and 2Gigs of bandwidth.

Aerosat and other small wisps should really consider upgrading existing clients to faster speeds for free if they dont want them to jump ship.

What is the price per gig after cap?

Telkom are planning to rollout their WiMax on the same model as ADSL. An access charge plus bandwdith charge.

So you will be able to access Wimax at R240pm, and use a third party ISP to provide the bandwidth portion. So generally, that will be around R70 per gig. There is likely to be pre-paid (rollover) and standard (use it or lose it) packages available.

The question that hasn't been answered yet, is whether the R240pm includes the modem? Or will there an initial outlay?

Surprisingly this isn't mobile, they just install a modem onto your roof and thats it.

Seriaas? Thats stoopid.
Does it also have an antenna?

I was looking at it as an option since I may be moving house.
If I need Telslum to come install it then I lose interest right there.

The WiMAX nr is 0800 204 705, option 2. Seems it's still in test phase and may/likely be commercially launched sometime in July ..if, according to the somewhat excited guy (who said he's the only guy taking calls on this) I talked to, it actually works! The radio hardware is by Alvarion, with installations apparently by them too. Bottom line: anybody's guess as to what/when/where/how.

Looks interesting, iBurst better get their act together or they'll be long gone before 2010.

You might want to confirm, maybe they could move it for you. But afaik they install the equipment on your roof, so you couldn't take it around with you like an iBurst modem.

You can pretty much count on it taking 'pro'/installer-level involvement to move things around. From what I can surmise, there's a CPE (customer premises equipment) box that goes up on a mast - think small suitcase-like thing on a pole- that gets jacked into a smaller box inside, likely via PoE ..THAT thing then get connected into the client's PC or router in the way we're used to seeing.

During roman times some donkey owners insisted they could get milk from interlakin to roma within 4 days - this same rule applies today.

How are they going to fit all that into laptops of the future?
