Not that my opinion matters all that much, but WoW emus arent illegal, and contrary to what was said by that mod, an admin said this:

I for one tried 2 of the many local servers popping up but they are just too laggy and buggy.
After running around Kalimdor for about 6hrs and finding NOTHING but scenery, I realised it was probably the most wasted time of my life ever... Just because its free and local doesnt mean to say its enjoyable.

So your argument is that Blizzard is wrong about blizzard emulators being illegal? :D

Suuuure. I mean what would they know being the ones who invented WoW and all.

I'm not arguing whether the servers are legal or not, I was bringing the fact that it's frowned upon to talk about emuservers here.

You dont get it lol, they dont have any controll over emulators, its not their business as it doesnt involve anything related to blizzard. Its merely a program that replies to packets recieved ;)

Ok, generally I am very hesitant to flame people directly but this just can't be helped.

Tehavatar are you really that stupid????

WoW is the Intellectual property of Blizzard Entertainment. Get that? You do NOT own the game. You pay for the privilege of playing it and with that there are certain terms and conditions you agree to. One of them is that you will not use their software to connect to any other server (or in your brilliant words... "merely a program that replies to packets received", which is not quite correct of the servers anyway).

While having an emulator itself may not be illegal (I don't really know), using one is. It is a clear and deliberate violation of your EULA.

Your argument is like saying I have a gun licence so therefore it’s ok for me to go around shooting people.

Falls under the law of copyright and licencing the game to be hosted by anyone else. The merely a program is where the problem comes in, it belongs to them you only have a licence to play it on their servers.
It is your choice to play on an emu, your risk etc.

Oh and yes it does involve "anything" related to Blizzard. It is involves their software and their intellectual property and their income.

the way i see it is: If you choose to play on the offical Blizzard servers then you as a individual needs to obide by there TERMS aka EULA.

If Tehavatar makes a server and charges a fee like what Blizzard do then that is illegal.If he uses the game for personal gain like money and charging people for fees and monthly subs then he is indirect violation of blizzard EULA.

Err... then he needs to create his own client.

From the World of Warcraft client EULA:

4. Responsibilities of End User.

A. Subject to the license granted hereunder, you may not, in whole or in part, copy, photocopy, reproduce, translate, reverse engineer, derive source code from, modify, disassemble, decompile, or create derivative works based on the Game, or remove any proprietary notices or labels on the Game. Failure to comply with the restrictions and limitations contained in this Section 4 shall result in the immediate, automatic termination of the license granted hereunder and may subject you to civil and/or criminal liability. Notwithstanding the foregoing, you may make one (1) copy of the Game Client and the Manuals for archival purposes only.

B. You agree that you shall not, under any circumstances,

(i) sell, grant a security interest in or transfer reproductions of the Game to other parties in any way not expressly authorized herein, nor shall you rent, lease or license the Game to others;

(ii) exploit the Game or any of its parts, including without limitation the Game Client, for any commercial purpose, including without limitation use at a cyber cafe, computer gaming center or any other location-based site without the express written consent of Blizzard;

(iii) host, provide or develop matchmaking services for the Game or intercept, emulate or redirect the communication protocols used by Blizzard in any way, including without limitation through protocol emulation, tunneling, packet sniffing, modifying or adding components to the Game, use of a utility program or any other techniques now known or hereafter developed, for any purpose, including without limitation unauthorized network play over the Internet, network play utilizing commercial or non-commercial gaming networks, or as part of content aggregation networks; or

(iv) facilitate, create or maintain any unauthorized connection to the Game or the Service, including without limitation any connection to any unauthorized server that emulates, or attempts to emulate, the Service. All connections to the Game and/or the Service, whether created by the Game Client or by other tools and utilities, may only be made through methods and means expressly approved by Blizzard. Under no circumstances may you connect, or create tools that allow you or others to connect, to the Game's proprietary interface other than those expressly provided by Blizzard for public use.

What I find amusing about sites such as theses, is that the people that play them don't realise that the game only starts at 70.

1-70 is a long tutorial on learning to play your character, only then the fun starts with 10-40man Raids. They also miss out on loads of content, PVP, BG's and Arena's.

They are only spoiling the game for themselves in the end.

Also things like:
If you are stuck in a party and you are unable to join another, use the following command. Its case sensitive.

/script LeaveParty()

If you have fallen through the surface, or you are stuck, use this command:

.start

NOTE: If you move after using this command it will fail, and you will have to wait until a GM comes online.

warns me to stay away. One day they'll get to 70 then, poof! server goes bye bye. All their time and energy wasted.

AFAIK the addons has been approved by WoW.

That is why the addons part has been writen into the character sellect screen. However those do not intail modifying scripts. Some addons will have you banned. Best to used the tried and tested ones ;)

That is a really good point.

Wonder where one can get a list of WoW approved addons ?

Lol, it works for your argument when you what you're reading is out of context. Try quoting the full point next time :rolleyes:

Regarding legit addons, I'm pretty sure you'd get booted pretty quickly if they pickup you're using something you're not supposed to be using. Have you ever seen how beserk the game goes when you have out of date addons?

These private servers are pathetic. If you want to play WoW, pay your R120 every month and experience what WoW is about. If you don't want to pay to play the best MMORPG in the world rather get Guildwars or something.
