I have read a few threads on this but have tested extensively and come up with interesting results...
I have a setup where I have an ADSL modem and a Linksys broadband router. When our LAN machines are set to use the broadband router as the default route to the net, the router (or skype?) is intelligent enough to route skype traffic via the LAN. File send for example, flies.
Having the same setup, but creating our own seperate adsl pppoe connections throws skype a curveball. The default route is then handled (I assume) by Windoze and all skypte traffic to each other is handled via the internet. File send is obviously alot slower for example.
Even more interesting to me is that I have route sentry running on mine - you know, to route local via my local only account and international via the international account... despite this, it uses the international route for the file send to the other LAN users. Ok, granted the other users are connected via international only... maybe this is the reason? Either way, it's wasting bandwidth and I thought Skype or routesentry could handle this.... Will investigate further to see how many relays when on pppoe...
Anyone know a way of (setting up routing tables perhaps?) in windoze or skype to guarantee local traffic is not sent over the internet?
UPDATE: Skype reports no relays on a call within the LAN, so there is no firewall holding us up, it is direct... any takers?
