I have just placed and order for WiMax from Telkom. It has been launched and is running...

Seeing as though there are no plans for any landlines in our area this was my only solution other than iBurst or 3G/HSDPA.

Will keep everyone updated as to the installation dates and progress.

Can you give more detail on how you went about ordering WiMax ie from the telkom shop or online.

I saw the article on MWEB challenging Telkom on WiMax and saw that it had been launched. You go about it the same way as what you'll order DSL but if your exchange isn't DSL enabled or you don't have acccess (lines) then they will offer you WiMax. I asked them directly for WiMax, told them there aren't any lines that have been installed in my area.

Call 10217 for business or 10219 for resedential.

Yeh... tell me too, cause i dont have a land line...and Mweb told me to s'off...

omg...telkom are f'n idiots.... I called 10219... they told me to call technical support, 10215, they told me to call business, 10217, they intern told me to call 10219... I HATE THE DAMN FOOLS that get jobs in this country...

@superjuice... what EXACTLY did you ask for.

.. but you need one to call Telkom... or you could use your cell

I called them and asked for WiMax. They asked if I had applied for ADSL before, I said yes I had but there have been no lines installed in my area. Gave details over the phone, hoping to get an installation date today.

Check out www.dobroadband.co.za, click DO products, then click Telkom Wireless you'll see it listed there. No info is listed on www.telkom.co.za though...

Yup...thats basically what I did *sigh*

WiMax a far away dream

I live in a more remote area. I doubt if I will see WiMax soon. Man, we don't even have 3G or ADSL yet. I connect via GPRS though.

I do understand why it takes long to roll out these technologies in remote areas but we can only drool over what you guys have as standard

Aah, this really made me laugh! :D
Typical Telkom.

I got the same run-around yesterday from their helpdesks and this morning I jumped in my car and went to order Wimax from the client service office. Once I got there I was told that this is still only available in Jo'burg, PTA, Durban and CT and not yet here in BFN.
They could not give me a launch date and told me that I should check in the office from time to time, as the info on the websites is not always accurate. - Go figure!

LOL... I'm in Jhb. Superjuice...how bout you order it for me :D

I also tried to get that info (relating to equipment needed) from Telkom. What they have told me was that my old ADLS modem\router will not work, but I will be able to connect all my devices (PCs Xbox360 etc) to whatever it is that they will supply with the installation. When asked what this will cost, the reply was that it will be included in the R490 setup fee. you can then add your ISP details on this device (same as with your ADSL router\modem) I suspect that it will probably have 1 Ethernet port, but could not get any confirmation on this. They (telkom) now have a wimax helpdesk (0800 204 705)

on your side, all you need installed on your pc is a Network card,(and router if more than one PC), the rest of the hardware they bring.

If you are outside the adsl footprint, then wimax will not be offered to you. I don't know why we (telkom) are offering wimax support on 0800 375375 option 4 then option 3, because majority of the customers who were on the wimax trial are still on it. They said it would roll out commercially come August but I can't see it personally happening because there are a few bugs which need to be ironed out.

Only Cape Town, Joburg, Pretoria (who initially only ran the trial) and Durban will receive wimax.

Equipment like I stated in a previous post, will be a 1 port ethernet indoor unit and a outdoor antenna which is placed on your roof, the company providing it is called Alvarion.

At the moment speeds are at 512Kb...

Umm I'm not sure whatelse there is too be said.

Well If neotel did not start with WiMAX I don't think Melkhom would have either? IMO they just trying to get as many people onboard before neotel launches and keep them binded in a 12-24 month contract....

R319 512K 1Gig Cap,
Sorry but WTF? must one do with a 1Gig Cap? I use about 4-10Gig's a month [uncapped, 64k]

PLEASE NEOTEL! I BEG YOU!! Make it 512k but 10+Gig CAP! :(

BTW loked at do broadband.co.za Prices *199 Pending ICASA aproval.... LOL?
ICASA & Telkom are practicaly thier own share holders....

Oh me 2 Wanna know how it goes, Streaming, Gaming, Browsing & Downloading ;)
