Hey guys,

I'm sorry if this has been discussed before, but I really need some help with this topic.

I'm looking in to buying a PS3, but unfortunately I don't own a HDTV :(

So, the next obvious choice is to run it off my LCD, using a HDMI to DVI converter Cable.

Now using this idea, i thought that it should work and everything would be fine then.

BUT, today I was looking a bit further into it, and apparently it won't work if your monitor doesn't support HDCP. The monitor just won't pick up the signal from the PS3. :(

Now is this really the case? or am I missing something?

Aside from running it on a normal TV, is there any other way to get the PS3 to work on a LCD monitor, without having to purchase a new one?

(btw. I have a Samsung Syncmaster 930B monitor) if that helps

I would really appreciate the help
Thanx in advance

U can run if off a tv-card?? thru your computer ??

i've seen tv-cards that can do 1024x768

It is a good idea, it would be the same thing if I run it through my graphics card ;)

the only prob then is that whenever I use the PS3, the PC has to be turned on too.

But it is an alternative ;)

any other ideas welcome

and I'm not the brightest person when it comes to this stuff, so if I've got it all wrong, plz let me know ;)

Thanx

yeah, thats true, I was first against getting a PS3 and said I'd stick with my PC.

But, being the owner of both a PS1 and PS2, and playing quite a few games on them, when I saw my old time favourites returning on this console, and looking even better than before, I couldn't resist ;)

Along with the very promising looking games coming out on PS3

Gr8 move u wont regret it.. Yeah ur LCD must support HDCP, that's what i used in the beginning now i just got a Full HD LCD.. :)

Nice :)

Suppose I have to make another plan then, and draw out like R3000 for a Temp. LCD, until i can afford a nice big HDTV :D

The new Acer 22" Widescreen LCDs have HDCP support and I have seen them @ Incredible Connection for R2999. They could be your best bet as a temporary stopgap until you get your proper HDTV.

It sounds like you're going to have to buy a new monitor whichever way you go, but if you can plop down R6600 for a PS3, a few grand extra for a new 20" monitor shouldn't be a problem.

However (Scotty stop reading now ;) ) just remember that if you're forking out R10k for that setup, you could happily get a 360 pro and a 32" lcd 720p TV for the same price. As I said, just a thought.

If you are going to buy a PS3 you may want to wait until the starter pack arrives. Then you will get an extra controller and 2 free games for the same price as the current PS3..

Along the lines of what Doobi said, if you bought a 360 pro, you'd already have R3k saved up for an HDTV... use it, don't use it.

why dont you guys also say that upto 1 in 3 X-Box's are faulty?

Rather spend more money for a reliable product

Never had a problem on my xbox... neither have any of my friends.

Lets not turn a perfectly reasonable request into a fanboy war.

The Xbox 360 has a terrible record but it also has a 3 year warranty to balance that out.

Buy whichever console suits your needs the most...

im not turning this into a fanboy war ;D

I just think most of the current forumites try and sway everyone's decision. If someone mentions they plan on buying an AMD, all the trolls come out of the wood work and say buy intel! And as in this case, you have someone planning on buying a PS3 and then the usual suspects appear trying to get someone to purchase an Xbox instead.

Yeah but that's just because the 360 is so much better :D

I'm kidding relax ;) We should all just try and refrain from pointing out the faults in the other machine. Say whats good about your preference though....

Sissygig, there was nothing troll about it, just a simple suggestion to investigate. If Peppercorn specifically wants a PS3 more power too him/her, but most South Africans are unaware of the Xbox because of Sony's historical dominance.

It was a suggestion that he look into it as (i believe and so does BC obviously) that he'll get a better all round experience, and also not waste cash. He also hasn't taken into consideration that Sony still doesn't supply a proper HD cable with the thing even at the ridiculous price.

I look at it like this, even if you're a dyed in the wool Sony fan, buying a PS3 now just seems like a waste, it has no games that aren't implemented better, or outclassed by games on the 360 and it's list of exclusives for the rest of the year are thin, and for my taste, unexciting, oppossed to the 360 tsunami of AAA titles already available and still on their way.

It's not to say the PS3 won't get there, but why sit twiddling your thumbs for ages? Get the 360 now, drown yourself in awesome games on a great big LCD TV, and in about a year or so's time, when there are a decent number of good exclusive PS3 titles and hopefully the price has dropped to something more palpable, you can pick up the PS3 as well, even sell the 360 to finance the PS3.

As far as the hardware issues go, the 360 now has a 3 year warranty. That's better than any piece of sony kit I've seen anywhere, even their R30k TV's. As GM said this is not a fanboy fight otherwise we can start tearing some nice new one's into the PS3 as well.

Nice guys...turn a simple request in Console War X (the "X" because i've lost count)

I'm not 100% clued up to what is available for the PS3 in terms of add on cables (1st or 3rd party) but i'm sure that like the 360 a VGA cable is available. If so any monitor would be suitably connected using the monitors standard VGA cable coupled with the PS3 cables VGA out.

Iwojima, a standard VGA cable is not available for the PS3... you need a special converter and then it only works on certain types of monitors...

[edit] I beat Doobiwan :D
