If you are a member of World Community Grid, please join the MyADSL Team! It is quite lonely being the only member :(

If you run the BOINC client, the Team ID is: 17388.

If you are not a member, please sign up, download the client and join the team! It is free and for a good cause.

How it works:
You run an application that consumes the unused CPU time of your computer for research projects. You can help find the cure for AIDS!! You can set the client to only do processing during certain times or as the screensaver, so it will not affect the performance of your PC.

I donate my CPU time to the following projects:
AfricanClimate@Home
FightAIDS@Home

If someone 'official' from MyADSL would like to become the Team Master, please send me your details so that I can make the change.

Already part of the easynews group but its definitely a worthwhile endeavour imo.

so was I, but I've never used the "credits".
I do but the credits arent really the point, nor is what group you're in. As long as the data gets crunched it's all good. :)

I posted about folding a while back and got a pretty bad response from this forum :(. Seems like US (and EU as well) are the only regions that actually have dedicated sections for distributed computing projects like these. Why can't we have one and increase awareness about it in SA.

Agreed! You are more than welcome to claim my credits, if that is possible. I should have quite a bit.

Great, so you have the client installed! Are you joining Team MyADSL then?

I was hoping that the mods would agree that this is a worthwhile cause and make a sticky or forum for this. The community has to be interested though, otherwise nothing will be done.

So please join the team!!

I joined. I don't know why we don't have a Folding/DC subsection on the forums yet. Hopefully the mods and rpm will come round.

Thanks - who knows, I might take you up on your offer :)

While I dont think there would be enough traffic to warrant a separate section for it you could always ask rpm.

I agree that's why I'm not gonna ask right now ;). But why are people here so reluctant to give up UNUSED CPU cycles?

No idea. I have a headless pc that I keep running 24/7 for skype and fax duties (when we have power :o) that has been running the WCG client solidly for almost 18 months.

Is there any real proof that these folding projects actually achieve anything other than false hope?

Not that I am aware of. I doubt that a company like IBM would support something like this if there wasn't any benefit. Besides, isn't false hope better than no hope at all?

I think the issue with people being so reluctant is that they think it will slow their PC's down or that it will consume precious bandwidth, which is a valid concern. I think it downloads about 1MB a day (if left running 24/7). On some broadband packages (iBurst), that is more than half your cap!

Obviously with ADSL, bandwidth should not be a concern as 24MB out of 1GB is very little.

Mines just that single PC though come to think of it I've got a mini running 24/7 that I might also add.

I received this email from WCG (names replaced with xxx):

My name is Mxxx Rxxx and I work in IBM SA for the team responsible for World Community Grid(WCG). I would like to thank you as the Team Captain of one of our top performing WCG teams for the significant contribution to this humanitarian computing initiative.

I write to invite you and your team to promote, and participate in, an important event. December 1st is World Aids Day, when the world comes together to renew it's energy to fight a disease which affects and kills so many people, and leaves so many more orphaned. Throughout the the month of December the WCG will run a Team Challenge aimed at increasing WCG's contribution to the FightAids@Home research project running on the grid.

You will receive an invitation to join this challenge. It will be issued from a team we have set up for this purpose: "IBM WCG SubSaharan Africa Challenge"

Should you wish to contact me, please email me at xxx@za.ibm.com

Thank you very much for your time and consideration

I've joined the team for this, I think it's a wirthwhile effort. I've been running other BOINC projects, but have now signed up for this, since it may lead to breakthroughs.

I want to spend the time on Fighting Aids@Home and the Clean Energy Project.

If there are any other readers out there, please, join the cause. In the long run it will be worth it. Look at Folding@Home and all the breakthroughs they have made.
