....wish there was easy way to go from excel to forum table tags ;)

Thanks for the useful info, but how does that international/local split work on XDSL, does that mean if I use international only then my speed will be 96k ?

yes, but as xdsl say they can increase the split speeds at 64K as shot - which of course increases your price p/m too...

384k IS express
Price: R912.00

work hours – KBps : *128K or 384K (*threshold speed)

p2p/torrents: work hours - 128K / after hours *128K or 384K

when u hit your threshold on this type of account for the month , do u remain uncapped for like services like p2p etc and if shared between 2 people beacuse of 2 concurrent connections , will the speed be shared equally ?

yes you are not cut off from downloading just at half speed and theoretically yes you should each be getting 50%

512 uncapped... and unshaped?

Awesome post, Necuno - thanks for the information.

We're looking at getting an 512k uncapped, unshaped account. Can anyone suggest a REPUTABLE ISP?

Main requirement: I HAVE to be able to play World of Warcraft on it with latency below 700ms.

Any feedback would be GREATLY appreciated.

i use 512k fakeuncapped with webafrica unshaped - WA has verizon unshaped and saix unshaped in one account you switch between them which helps when one of then is off.

either gamCO or Webafrica, they at least pull it out and do something about a situation even if you are a non client.

I recommend Openweb. Their service rocks, and MrBeep is active on these forums.

I have been with the dudes for a while now, without any hassles.

I'll check them out, thanks man. Are these uncapped as well? That's a little more important than the unshaped part. I can still live with unshaped 700ms pings... but the whole cap thing is seriously starting to annoy me.

Edit: Just read up a bit more on gamCO - their offering (Uncapped Express) seems to be uncapped and unshaped. They do have thresholds though. If I understand the threshold thing correctly: if you go over 10Gigs in ten days, your speed is cut down to half. After ten days, it's reset again. Rinse and repeat. So you're not capped, they just chop your speed in half?

And, if I may ask, how much are you paying? And that's unshaped and uncapped?

Another point to consider is this: I don't CARE about local bandwidth. I NEVER go onto local sites, save for MyADSL and News24. I'd say that 98% of my traffic is international.

...well its the IS Express accounts [max i got out so far for one month was 116Gigs], uncapped but throttled as i have pointed out here
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=1226146&postcount=1

shaped speeds why i used webafrica prepaid unshaped with it as it includes both verizon and saix which does make a difference because if one is down you can use the other one.

Gah! All of these things are so confusing! All I want is an uncapped account that I can play WoW on... for a decent price.

GamCo looks good so far. I might go with them. They advertise it as unshaped and uncapped. I emailed them to confirm though.

Thanks for all the info, Necuno.

this must be a first - a uncapped account that support 2 concurrent connections?

Regarding GamCo:

Would they actually allow two users to connect using the same username?

On their "Interpreting the service" page, they say

GamCo said:
Though 2 x Concurrent connections are advertised, the second concurrent connection is designed to assist customers when there connection is sometimes locked on the network allowing them a second option to connect.

Doesn't seem like it to me. Which means that you can't go halfies with a buddy on the ISP costs? Bummer.

just remember its IS satellite unshaped ! and not SAT3 (saix) - on the express and business uncapped.
which means 500ms-1000ms.

for lower latencies you need fiber or whole fiber uncapped options which leaves XDSL or ODS's fiber in which ODS's will render the highest lowpoint and highpoint in speeds.

yes its confusing - why we need a table compare of sort here that puts all the products in place where the are exactly to each other.

Necuno, so just to confirm, you would suggest I go with ODS' Fiber Plus package at R1618 a month? They don't mention anything about throttling either.

Might be worth an investigation

i personally would demand a test account first at least for 1 day to see if its worth it because with our "uncapped" options paying this much you must be somehow sure its worth it.

the uncapped express you would get faster speeds even at half speed VS ods fiber (due to their contention, the speed is divided by 3 at any given time so you might get full speeds now but maybe one day strait for 10hours or more a third of forth - fast slow slow slow fast slow fast slow fast fast and so on. express you at least have 100% or 50% apart from normal IS downsides), but it has threshold and shaped - thus you must then pay extra for wow on unshaped.

sigh tis all so confusing than it should be :/

Well, the GamCO one is unshaped as well, so it should be fine, surely? Even if it's on SAT, if I get 500 - 1000ms pings, that's... sort of okay. Just as long as it doesn't go over 1000. I have a normal, shaped account at the moment and I manage quite fine most of the time.

Getting a test account is a very very good idea! Thanks for the tip! :D
