Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone else is seeing this. I have a widescreen - 1440x900 on my Mini. When I do a slideshow on images that are 4:3, they are always stretched sideways to fit perfectly on the screen. It doesn't matter if I enable or disable "Scale photos to fill screen" in the slideshow settings. I don't see anything in iPhoto preferences either. Does anyone know how to get around this?

This is iPhoto 5

Thanks

Is Automatic Ken Burns effect enabled?

Geez, bwana, are you ever *not* in front of your computer? :)

It was enabled, I disabled it - makes me feel seasick. Doesn't seem to make a difference? I fiddled with the "Slideshow format" settings too - 4:3 stretches it exactly the same as "current display" does, 16:9 still stretches it, but makes the whole image smaller, so that there is a thick black frame around it.

Could be a bug with v5 - I dont have a computer with it on I'm afraid.

Does the same happen with preview's slide show?

You could try trashing your prefs (keeping a copy of course:)) and see if that helps.

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist

Hmm, that worked somewhat. In slideshow mode (before starting the slideshow) it now shows the preview scaled correctly, but the slideshow itself is still stretched.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to nuke the stuff in the ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library too. I'll fiddle with it some more tonight - have to catch my bus now.

You could try rebuilding the library first.

Heh, no worries - I've only got a few things in iPhoto - still testing the waters. I really like it, it's just the stretching that's giving me grief. Before I left I completely nuked the library and the prefs.plist. Still the same result. I'm contemplating buying iLife 08 simply to scratch my itch, but it's silly if I'm going to buy Leopard soon anyway (or a new Mac with Leopard on). <sigh>

The new iPhoto will come with a new Mac as part of the iLife suite, but not with Leopard on its own.

Oh - what comes with Leopard then - the same one as in Tiger? Or something inbetween?
iLive (including iPhoto) only comes free with a new machine, along with the OS. The only free one is iTunes.

OK, so I fiddled and fiddled. To no avail. Ended up upgrading. Frustration! iPhone '08 does the same!

Anyway, going over Apple's forums, I found this:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1090600&tstart=75

Hmm, started a slideshow, fiddled with my LCD's buttons until it displayed the resolution: 1280x960. My LCD's resolution is 1440x900...

Is anyone else seeing this? If so, can you specify your hardware (gfx card & mem especially)? I suspect that the resolution switching might be down to iPhoto for some or other reason needing more than 32MB of video ram. Which is weird, since 1440x900 should need just under 5MB to display a 2D image.

That doesn't account for the stretching though. Is no one else seeing this?

Bizarre problem - Are you using vga or dvi?

I've solved it. ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist is a binary file, which is why my grep searches didn't find the word "resolution" in it. Using the Property List Editor (comes with the Dev tools on the OSX DVD), I found an entry:

SlideshowFixedScreenRes = NO

Changed this to YES - problem solved. Pictures look much better too!
