Pings to SGS Game server unacceptable

I have been playing on-line games since I first had an ISDN line. I moved to ADSL as soon as it became available in our area (Wavecrest Jeffreys Bay) approximately 2 years ago. Until 4 weeks ago I was able to play on the local servers (both SGS and UGSA) with pings averaging 45-65.

Something changed after an area-wide ADSL outage 5 weeks ago. My pings are never below 145 and web-browsing was a major problem with some URLs (noteably the SGS Forums) taking up to 18 minutes to display.

In an effort to resolve the issue I have replaced the router, NIC, CAT5 cable between the router and PC and even used a spare HDD to clean install Windows XP SP2 (including all the critical updates) and BF2 (Patch 1.41) to no avail. I even tried using an Mweb account and then an Intekom account - the problem remained.

I contacted my ISP (Axxess) who said the problem lay with Telkom. At this point I started asking other gamers in the area and found, to my astonishment, that they were also having major issues with unplayable pings. There are 3 us in Wavecrest with the same problem.

I duly logged a fault with Telkom yesterday and this morning the technician changed the DSLAM at the exchange (twice) and came to the house to check for faults. Nothing was found and the situation WRT the ping problem has not changed at all.

I have been given 2 test accounts by the ADSL helpdesk. One shaped and the other unshaped. I have used both and my ping problem remains unresolved.

Other gamers around the country are experiencing similar problems, notably in the Eastern Cape and PE in particular.

Having read on these forums yesterday about the AUP and resultant changes in Telkom's policies I wonder if the gaming community are the first to experience said changes? If this is the future of gaming in SA where we cannot even connect to a local gaming server then I will be first in line to cancel my DSL line and I hope that others will do the same.

When did this start?, Last week my 512K was upgraded to 4mb and the exact night the upgrade took place my latency went through the roof, this all happened last week thursday.

do seperate pings of 41.242.128.1 and 41.241.128.1 - post your results please.

138 and 148 respectively using a Telkom-supplied unshaped test account on a 512 line

ok

questions:

1-how does your line health look - Attenuation -,SNR - both up and down - post them details!
2-how far from the exchange are you
3-have they done a reset on your dslam card
4-have they swopped your dslam card

in your first post you said - it sounds like an area problem...sounds like either a faulty dslam - or path from the DSLAM to the BRAS

also a while back they had this thing of "error correcting" on adsl which doubled your latency but helped in keeping it stable.

I'm in PE and pinging those to addresses yield a 50ms average ping.

What I have noticed lately is much more disconnection from game servers playing BF2.

1-how does your line health look - Attenuation -,SNR - both up and down - post them details!

SNR Margin 30dB up 18dB down
Line Attenuation 12dB up 5dB down
Data Rate 512kbps up 256kbps down

2-how far from the exchange are you

about 500m of cable from me to the Wavecrest exchange

3-have they done a reset on your dslam card

Yes

4-have they swopped your dslam card

Yes

That's what I thought but Telkom say there's no fault at the DSLAM or the "server" (I don't know which server the ADSL helpdesk technician was referring to. Is there a server in the exchange?)

also a while back they had this thing of "error correcting" on adsl which doubled your latency but helped in keeping it stable.

Where do I find settings for this and how do I disable it if it is running?

Thanks for the help guys, I'm very grateful

that error correcting is done dslam side - not client side ... called "INTERLEAVING" ? almost sure it might be that

Eish!! And I get them to stop it how? :o

Have logged calls for both my DSL line sites and allready had a response that my home site (where I game from) DOES have a line error.

Even when I ping saix.net, I can not get a ping below 150

btw, I stay less than 1km from pctech
