Its alliance partners the trade union federation Cosatu and the South African Communist Party (SACP) have said government's policies have betrayed the poor, and are pushing for more pro-poor policies, including a basic income grant for the unemployed.
In the run-up to choosing a possible successor to President Thabo Mbeki in December, Cosatu is rooting for embattled former deputy-president, Jacob Zuma, perceived as the right candidate to push their agenda.
