Hello all,

I saw an advert in a news paper on a F@stlink E220:
  • Subscription: R209 pm x 24
  • Sim & Connection: R236.80 once-off
  • 350 Mb data bundle
  • Modem: "Free"

My question now is, after the 24 months, what happens to the subscription amount, seeing that the modem is now "paid off"?

There is also the following option:

  • Subscription: R9.99 pm x 24 (ProData)
  • Sim & connection: R236.80 once-off
  • No data bundle
  • Modem: R999 once-off

If, in the above option, you calculate the monthly total as if the R999 for the modem is also being paid over 24 months, the total would be: (R999 / 24) + R9.99 + R169 (350Mb bundle) = R221 pm. After the 24 months, the modem would also be "paid off", leaving the R178.99.

Regards,
Pieter

Here is the reply I got from MTN:

Thanks for your query.

You are quite correct in your calculations below. On the Extended Data 350MB plan, the 24 month subscription cost includes the data bundle and data card / USB Mini modem. At the end of the contract period the subscription amount is not typically reduced but you do have few other options:

  • Carry on with the subscription of the existing data contract on a month to month basis at the same subscription fee without a new USB Mini modem. (Without renewing the contract)
  • Renew your existing data contract (for a further 24 months) in which case you get a new USB Mini modem (typically advanced technology)
  • Upgrade to a higher data contract in which case you get a new USB Mini modem (typically advanced technology)
  • Cancel the data contract and apply for a month-to-month ProData contract with a suitable data bundle (as you indicated below)

The Extended Data contracts are designed to benefit those individuals who prefer to finance their data modems over a 24 month period. The ProData contract, however, offers a specific set of benefits to ensure that we address the needs of our different types of customers:

  • This is a month-to-month contract, which means the customer can cancel this contract at any stage (Not bound to a 24-month contract as in the case of the Extended Data contracts).
  • If a customer already owns a USB Mini modem or data card he can only pay for the data required on a monthly basis by loading the correct data bundle.
  • If a customer can purchase the modem outright and intends to use less than 350MB of data per month it offers him the flexibility to select the data bundle that is adequate for his needs, as well as the ability to change the data bundle should his needs change in the future.

I hope this answers your question adequately.
