Hi Guys, Since the 6110 nav is unavailable, I'm looking at the blackbery curve 8310. It doesnt have wifi or 3G, only EDGE, but i do like the larger screen, keyboard and great email support with attachment. Of course, mostly the GPS! But, it uses Blackberry maps, are they any good? Its either this or I'm looking at getting a seperate NUVI GPS. I just need to know if the Blackberry maps and GPS is any good?

thx

Works like a bomb when ever i have used it.
The 8310 has an excellent light-sensing screen, it auto adjusts brightness and the backlit keyboard to situation.
It actually uses a Vodafone SatNav application and not BB maps.
When last i checked BB maps did not have coverage in SA :(
Also has a really great Google Talk IM app.
Highly recommended phone.

thx MrSmith, very nice, I like...

the vc package also comes with unlimited nav, emails and browsing, which is cool. I dont have to make sure I got data bundles to use the features on the phone

Blackberry 8310 - GPS

Hi Dudley

It might be a bit quick to ak you because you seem still to be strugling in getting hold of the mentioned Blackberry. (Hopefully not awaiting me)

Two things that I am trying to find out about the GPS and cant is:
1. Is the GPS assistance voice enabled. (Does the phone tell in voice when to turn)

2. Where do one get some South African Maps(or others) for the phone.
I do not seem to be able to find any site or reference to such a site.

I hope you could asist me with this answers.

@ just_bvr

1. yes it is voice assistance enabled and does tell you when to turn etc.

2. the included Vodafone NavSat application downloads (via GPRS/EDGE) the maps for your route once you have set the destination and it has a GPS fix on your current position. basically it just downloads the maps on the fly as and when they are needed.

all works very well.

yeah, i have done the research, it is a nice phone and GPS, does the job. I tried to get my upgrade this morning, got two choices. Get a new contract with a new number, or I have to wait till end of the month to change my plan to the blackberry 100. Can only do it end of the month. But i really need the phone, going to JHB this week and doing a lot of driving, so the GPS will come in handy...YAY, no more getting lost, asking for directions or mapbooks!

Mr Smith

On the downloading of the files. Does it not chase op the monthly costs in a big way if the phone keeps on having to download maps wherever you travel, obviously provided you are useing the GPS function all the time.

The map dowloading is zero rated (free)
Its better than most GPS phones out there coz its retrieves "fresh" maps, so you not stuck with one set of maps on your phone for 2 years.

It works well informative voice nav.
Also has pedestrian navigation.
And if you have a friend with a 8310 you can sms link locations to him and it calculates from their position to your position.

The phone doesnt have 3G only downside, very good overall.
1GB memory card.

Errrr ya cant think of anything else, best GPS phone after the 6110.
Only problem if you find yourself with a locked line or no signal you kinda stuffed.

Hi JK8

You mention BEST PHONE AFTER 6110.

So do u prefer the Nokia 6110 Navigator and if yes why do u prefer it over the Blackberry.

It has 3G. The Navteq system is better than the BB navigation. It also work if theres no sim in the 6110.

I dont think any phone with GPS works better than the 6110.

OK WOW, WHAT A COOL PHONE!
I got myself one and I have to say its great. The GPS is superb and I havent yet found a place I cannot navigate to. The maps are downloaded realtime, so u always have the latest maps. Whats nice is that the contract with VC offers unlimited data downloading. No more bundles and crap. All the services on the BB uses the GPRS/EDGE connection, and I have found nothing lacking! An absolute incredible phone. I have NO complaints about it. HIGHLY RECOMENDED.
In my opinion, is just as good, if not better than the 6110.

Slightly off-topic, but isn't Vodacom's Edge service limited to some areas, and not in places they offer 3G? I'd also like to get this phone, but I'm not sure if most of Johannesburg is covered with edge by Vodacom, can anyone advise?

what is the best way to hold the phone when it is initially finding the satelittes, top up, screen up, etc etc.

Great phone highly recommend it,flawless in every aspect.

GPS works perfectly every time, dont let the lack of 3G or wi-fi be a put off, sure it would be better but internet connectivity on the phone works great without them, very stable browser.Trackball is a great feature.

Move this phone to the top of your list if you're looking for a new phone.
