Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

Got feedback from Multichoice again today. I've never experienced such good customer service: "I’ve ran a simulation from our dolby room and I’m glad that I could replicate your problem . ShowMax and Youtube only had audio on left and right channels and nothing on surround sound. Linear and...

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

Apologies! :giggle: At that stage it was still bit unclear what the sound capabilities of normal Youtube and Showmax apps were.

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

I think all they are saying is that the Ultra should not output 5.1 if there is only sound on 2 channels. The only app on the Ultra I will be using is Disney+ as it is the only media device I own supporting it.

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

Update: After my query was escalated to the relevant department at Multichoice and I described the problem in detail, I received the following reply by email: "You’re absolutely correct. Your understanding is spot on. If audio elementary stream is carrying 5.1 dolby signaling there should be an...

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

There was no mystery! Showmax is only stereo from my TV's app as well. I must have changed the amp to upmix by mistake while I was testing. Sorry for the confusion. But I've got some good news in my next post....

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

Thanks again for helping me test this. I'm surprised that you did not have 5.1 sound from that title on Showmax. The only explanation is that my TV's Showmax app is doing the upmixing....or maybe the TV itself. You did mention that as a possibility. Unfortunately there is no "5.1 test" title on...

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

Thanks! I'm not at my TV right now, so I can't tell you the Web OS version, but it's much older than yours. Probably a 2016 version - model number 65uh770v. I tested the Showmax sound with The Handmaid's Tale (s01e01).

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

I appreciate your help, but you are wrong. There is no way that any upmixing by any device is able to play discrete sounds on every one of the six speakers, if the source was not 5.1 to start with. Try this Youtube for example. It plays the sound on each speaker exactly as the video shows. You...

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

I do not agree. The Youtube and Sowmax apps on my smart TV (LG) have perfect 5.1 sound - discrete sound on all 6 channels, no upmixing from my amp - it is set to direct mode. On Youtube you can search for "5.1 test sound" for sources with 5.1 sound.

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

Thanks for your reply. This actually helped me to narrow down the problem. I only tested the Youtube, Showmax and Disney+ apps and from the Explora Ultra they all do output 5.1, but the actual sound is only on the 2 front stereo speakers. The Netflix app works 100%. I'm not sure if Dstv knows...

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

Thanks for the reply, but the current setup (decoder connected via HDMI to amp) works perfectly for satellite broadcasts where it is using the same device (decoder), cable and the same HDMI port on the amp.

Explora Ultra apps only output sound on 2 stereo channels

I recently bought a new Explora Ultra decoder . Overall I am satisfied with the quality and working of this device except for one small problem. The Explora Ultra is connected directly to my AV Amp (Onkyo) via HDMI. Sound on the Explora Ultra is set to "Fixed". The sound on normal satellite...

    ABSA ehome affairs/DHA online payment

Thank you so much for this. It helped tremendously. However, I still have one problem - you are suppose to take a printed copy of the "Application Confirmation" with you to the branch. I can not find a link to this anywhere on the eHomeAffairs website.
