    Just a final update, I ran seperate power from a 12v DC powersupply. It seems like the garage motor has some strange volatages coming out of it so I figured I would just avoid using it to power the sonoff altogether.

    It measures 19v. When the Sonoff is connected the voltage drops down to 9v. I do not have a buck converter, but i am thinking of just running a cable from the 12v power supply that feeds to the gate motor.

    I did, and i double checked it with the multimeter. The strange thing is the black IC on the back of the sonoff gets warm to the touch after maybe 5 minutes. I can't help but think something is shorting out the device, but i just cannot figure out what.

    Without the common and trigger the sonoff still does not power on. The gate all still works fine as expected. The sonoff is isolated.

    Thats not a bad idea. I currently use an old cell phone (Old Sony Xperia Z) permanently connected to the charger. If the power goes off it updates our telegram group to notify us the power is out.
