Why didnt he flee to Australia then?

Maybe he means the ESKOM blackouts. Because then people cant listen to his stupid songs

I hold him in high regard (I even have his autograph!) for being part of the peaceful (relatively) transition. He came at the right time.
 
Just like the ANC, Hofmeyr forgets that the overwhelming majority of whites voted three times before 1994 to abolish apartheid and establish a majority-rule democracy:

First, in the mandate to de Klerk in the 1989 (white) general election, which was expressly about negotiation to majority rule,

Second, by 68.6% of white voters, in the referendum of March 1991,

Third, in the referendum of 17 March 1992, by 68.73% Yes vote by 85.08% of white voters.

Hofmeyr and his ilk need to stop ignoring history and scapegoating. He's just the obverse of his enemies, who do exactly the same.

I agree that the transition should have been slower. A slower transition would have been more acceptable had it started earlier. If SA had extended the Cape Qualified Franchise from 1910, rather than restricting non-white voting, things would have turned out better.

As if him and the NP would have known what good faith looked like, everyone's good faith was as far as how much they were going to benefit out of the deal, simple as that.

But then also there was no other choice.

Even if he knew exactly how things would turn out, he still had to have the general election and let the ANC win. He did stay on as deputy president. He could not really do anything more.

If he wanted protect the people from themselves and voting badly it would have required him to stay president until he dies.

It was. He could have been just another African tin pot dictator and the country would probably have deteriorated at a slower pace.
