  • Last week a number of third-party apps noted an inability to access Twitter, with APIs failing to connect.
  • Now Twitter has banned said platforms, citing a long-standing policy regarding its APIs.
  • The platform has also updated its developer agreement to reflect its recent decision regarding third-party app clients.

I been using Talon for Android for as long as I been a Twitter user! The user experience isn't comparable IMHO....

I can understand the need to generate revenue through ads but this really is a hammer blow, not only to the developers, but users too...

Will I stop using Twitter? Probably not. It remains a great source of news and information...

Twitter discontinues its free API access, paid version in the pipeline

In a new tweet from Twitter's developers' account, the company announced that it's closing its free API access starting February 9 - a week from now. A new paid basic tier will be available soon.

Twitter is bleeding money each year and Elon Musk and his team are scrambling to save the social network from bankruptcy. This, in turn, means that some features on the platform will require a subscription in order to increase the revenue stream. The latest feature to take the hit is the free API access for developers.

Just stumbled upon Albatross, an android 3rd party app for twitter. I like it a lot.

Just stumbled upon Albatross, an android 3rd party app for twitter. I like it a lot.

I am curious how Twitter is applying their bans? When Facebook hunted down third-party apps, they banned everything and anything used to access Facebook/Instagram, even wrappers with developers receiving takedown notices.

How Albatross is living I don't know, but Fenix, Talon, Owly, Friendly and Simple are all dead with Twitter. I would think that API access has been limited. The apps kill switch happened on January 13th, but Albatross was updated on the 14th and returned to service.

I really miss Fenix… Bad move by Musk and co. Should have allowed the apps under the condition they show ads. I could have lived with that.

So Fenix's dev, on his Mastadon someone posted this yesterday,

TwitterDev finally announced some more details.
1. Delay new rules for 4 days.
2. Free "bot" level of up to 1,500 Tweets/month for a single authenticated user (probably no read access).
3. $100/month "low level of API usage" tier.
4. Premium API (the expensive one that had prices listed) goes away in favor of Enterprise (the even more expensive one with no prices listed).

Before anyone asks, this does not mean 3rd party clients are coming back, if anything its the exact opposite.

having a look at TwitterDev, this was posted,

We have been busy with some updates to the Twitter API so you can continue to build and innovate with us. We’re excited to announce an extension of the current free Twitter API access through February 13. Here’s what we’re shipping then

Paid basic access that offers low level of API usage, and access to Ads API for a $100 monthly fee.

A new form of free access will be introduced as this is extremely important to our ecosystem – limited to Tweet creation of up to 1,500 Tweets per month for a single authenticated user token, including Login with Twitter.

Also on February 13, we will deprecate the Premium API. If you’re subscribed to Premium, you can apply for Enterprise to continue using these endpoints.

This is a new chapter for the Twitter API to increase quality, reduce spam, and enable a thriving ecosystem. We appreciate your patience as we implement these changes and we can’t wait to see what you build next! Stay tuned for more information on continued Twitter API access.

Ouch... that is quite the whack.

I guess Albatross might deprecate on February 13th, don't know. I only hope that this is taken under review to bring back Fenix and Talon which are the best Twitter clients in my opinion.

Yeah. It's a mess.

Really hope Albatross remains functional. I like it a lot and have only just started using it.

Hmmmm Albatross glitching now. Doesn't log me in. Actually quite buggy which is disappointing.

Edit:cleared cache and it's been behaving since. Will give it a week before deciding whether to keep it or not. Paid for the pro version though. Okay, only R33 but still...

Hell man, Albatross is way too glitchy to be a serious contender. Such a pity. Uninstalling.... maybe...

Looks like Albatross has finally died, one of the few 3rd party twitter clients that was still working... I'm a little pissed off...
