MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)

I don't understand the hype around Islam. He basically holds the guy down but doesn't hit him at all.
The commentators applaud him for resting. Then they say how great he is because he can do that the whole fight. Then he is called the greatest pound for pound.
I always thought the rules are resting is not allowed, if the fighters are static and don't do damage or don't go for submission attempts you should stand them up.

he wasnt really holding ...volk was defending the arm from moving into a choke

small slip from volk and it would have been over

islam held him in the way he couldnt get out

So if you hold the person's arm from choking for 60 seconds plus its like a stalemate but the fighter holding get the points. If Volk attacks he gets choked. If Islam tries another move he risks losing the choke. End result is you have turned MMA into holding match where you rest as neither fighter wants to give the other an advantage

tactics ...in boxing holding was a form of rest

High level fights are always going to disappoint casusals.. And this was super high level.
His speed chess as they say.

Both fighters were equally impressive in adjusting, using tricks and digging deep.
Islam was the clear winner though despite it being very close and competitive. He landed the cleaner more effective strikes and held more dominant positions in wrestling/grappling. Thats according to the scoring criterea

No real losers here. Both these guys stock went up a huge amount. and i would love to see a rematch further down the line.

I would also love to see volk vs porier in the future

Yes, the fighter that is holding is in a dominant position to end the fight

MMA is not boxing or kickboxing, wrestling/grappling is allowed.

That is not my argument. Just saying in the past when there is no action on the ground the referee tells the fighter they should fight and if they don't he stands them up.

So clearly the ref saw that islam is trying to choke him and hes trying to not get choked... and decided that there was enough action to leave them as is. Thats his perogative
So we agree as long as thats happening then he shouldnt stand them up. As far as scoring goes... IM scores because hes in the better postition to end the fight.

The ref is best positioned to make that call... was similar in the Aljo vs Yan 2 fight.

Would be an interesting matchup, volk and Gaethje would be pretty violent i think as well.

still butt hurt over that kimura dan ? lol

Tweeting is easy. if hes got evidence then he shoulda brung it

Yup, if he knows then just bring it forward, loud talkers riding on the wave of media from a great fight.
Nut up or shut up

I dont understand this robbery talk... its clear that Islam won the fight.

NGL I was rooting for Islam all the way but volk effing impressed me for sure. And he made it known that he aint #1 p4p for no reason. Both fighters fought very well. both probably walked away thinking they could have done better.

TBH, volk can hold his head high... he had a close fight going up a weight class against the best active LW in the world. no shame in that and no need for sour grapes afterwards.... maybe its just the Aussie way?

I think its always like this, especially when you have 2 really solid guys with a strong following. The crowd played a part in making you feel Volk was doing well even when he wasnt.
Something I am disagreeing with is that Islam being moved to #1 p4p. This fight solidified for me that Volk still deserves that title, as odd and sometimes meaningless as it is (and hard to measure).
I feel Islam is a more natural LW than Khabib, but he still isnt a small LW. Volk is short, but stocky and I know he used to walk around really heavy, but I think that was just poor discipline more than natural weight, he is a natural FW and I dont think struggles too much with weight cuts.
He competed against no.1 LW, went the distance and did really well, i am not so sure Islam would do well moving up a weight class

Have to agree here, the crowd was going nuts for volk tapping Islam while his back was taken... that said, they are australians and were suiping since 8AM.

ja P4P is subjective. for me the definition of p4p is that if they were the same size, whos skillset wins...
Now theres a very good argument to be made that if volk were islams size that the fight goes another way.

My only thing is if #1 gets beaten... how can he still be #1? So IM gets #1 by default. If volk beats Yair convincingly then maybe he gets it back?
