I never listened to the friends speeches but the last thing anyone wants to do is to portray someone as an angel, so people always remind us that the departed was a human being with flaws, by pointing that out you don't necessarily mean someone was a bad person. I think it probably could have been in that context, unless they were telling us he was a lowlife, but what kind of a friend says that about a friend?
