All-day stage 6 load shedding is back – and Eskom warns it could get worse

Further, two generating units at the Lethabo Power Station were shut down due to coal constraints as the New Vaal Mine that is supplying the station has been unable to deliver the expected amount of coal during the past week because of the heavy rains, it said.

Well the wet coal excuse surfaced again

Yoh

Breakdowns currently amount to 21,243MW of generating capacity while 3,566W of generating capacity is out of service for planned maintenance.

But of course! Why are we surprised?

In the old days the steam locomotives were regularly delayed all over the country because of wet coal and stood idle between stations for weeks until the coal was dry enough so that they could continue their journeys. That is the sole reason why the railways scrapped steam and changed to diesel.

Who is ready for power every other day during winter?

While Eskom has tried to assure the nation and instil confidence that the supply and demand patterns will change and be more favourable as the country approaches winter – due to less planned maintenance taking place – analysts and energy experts have warned that the situation is likely to get worse.

Really feel for you guys in the big metros

Here in PE I still only get 4 hours on lvl 6

Normally 6AM till 8AM and then 4-6 or 8-10PM
In Durban too. People only getting 2 to 4 hour outages on Stage 6.

Not sure the size of the metro has much relevance. Not long ago PE had one of the worst schedules now it arguably has one of the best, as far as residential users go.

We're fortunate that stages 4-8 are identical if you're a residential user. From stage 5 they start adding industrial zones to make up the difference.

We also alternate between two and three, two-and-a-half hour slots (which are closer to two hours in practice for my area) and they're spread out throughout the day.

And our ghost town gets no relieve. Today no bank, no retail company will be open again in our malls. Hopefully some smaller Spars will be open at some times.

Our office park is going to be burning diesel tomorrow like it’s free…
And it’s not!
Our corporate estate no longer get rolling blackouts because the laanies at the polo fields have completed the building of their mansions and are now moving it. A truly wonderful development. The 4 informal settlements around with no access to power don't seem to be effected.

Yup, and when they add the industrial zones, we get sent home. No work, no pay..

That sucks but I'm sure it's the same story with a lot of businesses which routinely get load shedding. At least the industrial areas are protected up to a point.

All I know is, this SoE and bad policy is at economic war with the people, with bad socioeconomic repurcussions, and the only choice the people have is to go green which isn't broadly accessible. Attrition is hurting the people.

Loadshedding like this always bring unpalatable news my way, and week will truly suck.

Yeah, was also thinking about mates in manufacturing. I think Continental here in PE is also one of those impacted?

Yip. They've been struggling for a long time.

I get so gatvol of the challenges here in SA.
