MetroFibre making strange changes to its reseller fibre packages

Between the 5 of us gaming, streaming, working remotely (which probably takes up the most) the 100 Meg is just fine. Never had issues except for total outages.

When it comes to MFN that is a different kettle of fish. Remember during COVID when others got a free upgrade to double speed? I got absolutely nothing from Cool Ideas MFN. A while ago my 50 Meg went to 100 Meg but I had to pay more Now it seems like they are just going to increase the price again but everyone says that prices are going down.

Pretty sure MetroFibre have done two double ups over the last two years for all of its customers? How are you not benefitting from those double ups?

And there you have it.

many FNO's have been subsidizing the entry level products, with the high end ones.

The actual cost difference is relatively small. It will largely depend on the area of the roll-out, but financing payments on the upfront capital investment is the same whether the fiber line is 10Mbps or 1Gbps.

In terms of the monthly costs, they will likely be paying a moderate amount each month to the metro fiber providers like DFA and Openserve. Those costs will increase based on bandwidth, but typically a 1 gig link costs R30k pm a 10Gig link will cost about R70k pm. This varies highly by area, but the ratio is very similar. That is much smaller that the repayments on millions in capital upfront.

Lastly there is the datacenter infrastructure where they can peer with ISP's but they charge ISP's for those costs, so that does not affect the FNO rental.

It is not small. You need to take port capability into account (i.e. scalability), and not just the speed of the actual fibre into account. Have you seen the cost of what 1Gbps capable cards? To offer these speeds, networks have to be built with scalability in mind. Prices on this equipment jumps by orders of magnitude.

and have people wanting 2GB or 2.5GB. Pricing of the cards and the actualy delivery cost per MB goes up a huge amount.

You can use the internet for work also, it’s nit just for pr0n.

For me it’s about saving time when I need to work. I maybe watch one movie a month
100Mbps is more than enough for 3 of us. I suppose you have money so good for you.

Yup. Started at 100/100 for ~R1000 in September 2021.
Pushed up to 200/200 for free in 04/2022.
Pushed up to 400/400, R30 increase, now in 02/2023.

I have 400/400.
I download 4K HDR Linux distros. I'm not waiting 1h20m to download 30GB on a 50/50 line when I could be downloading it in 10m.

Check the box that says sequentially and you can start streaming your Linux as soon as the DL stabilises.

Yes, I was on the basic 10/10 package. It was upgraded to 25/25 and then 50/50 at no cost. Was through Rocketnet for the first and Mweb on the second
