MultiChoice targets 5,000 counterfeit remotes, joins Partners Against Piracy

In principle this is a good thing - SA should be a country where intellectual property rights are protected.
It does not help DStv's image problem, though. Their hardware should be as cheap as possible to encourage consumers to use their main product - content. If the original equipment is priced competitively there will not be a market for fake products.

Glad to see the police are being used for something as important as this instead of well real crime.

So can you make remotes that work with their devices, but which don't have any DStv labels on them?

Counterfeit goods are going to continue to come in and get sold. Even more so now with the appalling exchange rate. In an ideal world everyone would buy originals, but I can't blame people for buying knock offs.

MultiChoice has announced that South African police seized and saw to the destruction of 5,000 counterfeit remote controls that infringed on the company’s DStv logo trademark.

There is no IP on the remote technology itself, if you make a compatible remote that doesnt have the same design as the original remote or Dstv Logo you can produce them in the millions without any problems, in the same way that you can get universal remotes or other accessories, consoles are a good example of this, there is a reason why your cheap PSx controllers arent labeled Sony and doesnt have the circle, triangle, square or cross logos.

They will chase, exactly 5000 remotes, but they have no interest in taking on the types at Eskom.

But yeah, ... , such is life in the New ANC South Africa
