I have a Hyundai I20 1.6 2012 (10 Years old)

Repairs would be ~ R30K

* Steering Rack
* CV Joints
* Wheel bearing (Even though I did it recently)
* Brake Pads
* Needs some light body work "Paint"

Maybe or Maybe not it will last another 5 years where I can save up more money...

Then I have the other option to trade it in or sell it and buy another vehicle for R200K cash I really do not want to have debt again.
This option will use up all my savings and as things goes SA you need money for a rainy day?

The other thing I thought about is keeping the I20 fix it and save the money I would have spend on a new car ~ R4000 x 24 ~ R96000
Then decide if I still need to buy another vehicle? (If I would have had finance it through the bank)

Research that I did says basically do not keep a vehicle for longer than 10 years?( Because of depreciation) Do not buy new or older module +- 4 years.

That do not leave me with a lot of ground to play with?

My friends say I read too much into things and just do what I think is right... LIKE THAT HELPS!

How much is steering rack? Other parts should not be as much.

Part on i20 is normally pretyt cheap from aftermarket places like goldwagon.

That smells like dealership pricing.

I would imagine it can be done well for less than half of that.

Well got quoted on steering rack alone about R10K - R15K, but got a guy that said if I can get the part he will charge me R3K to put it in. Which will cost about 10K for steering rack and CV's.

The best "financial" decision is to drive your current car for as long as possible. But owning a car is not only a financial decision.

Drive it until the wheels come off, that is what I was thinking and save as much until I need to buy another one. (Well fix it at least until then)

Yes, as long as it's safe and reliable enough.

What do you mean by that?

The other issue is I spend little time in a car maybe 1 Hour in a car. 50KM a day.

For some people having a nice car is important. You have to spend your money on something right?

If you are in 100% survival mode all the time (Always getting what's cheapest and not what you like) then what's the point of living?

I Might splurge on a pair of shoes nicer then what I need, somebody with a bigger budget might buy a car they don't need.

I think that is one of the reasons, I would like something new. But do I need it...

Also keeping in mind new cars will have less issues and that if I keep it for another 5 years it will be worth less than nothing? or trade it in and make it another persons problem. (Which is maybe not the right thing to do)

Well I think I got my answer. Thanks everyone.

Sometimes it is so temping to get something new even when you know the satisfaction will only last a few hours.

Folks that know me will know my line of thinking:

Your i20 is inherently a good runabout vehicle. Shop around more for better prices of the big ticket items (yes I know labour intensive = bucks).

Have a sheet of most important to least important repairs & be systematic about it. Does XXX really need to be repaired right now?

Once sorted drive it till the wheels fall off.

Keep your savings (things are looking bleak in SA for long & likely will get worse).

Don’t fall into temptation as tempting as it sounds, my 2c.

say you fix it and it cost you R15k for that matter. Afterwards you have a car which you know has brand new parts in and will last you years to come (unless some other major thing goes).
So situation a) Fix it for R15k and have a reliable car again
b) Buy a car cash from your savings and also sell the old one. Now you sit with someone else's problem and you paid them to have it (unless of course you drop R150k on a relatively new small car, which is not guaranteed problem free just yet)
c) Trade the old car in and buy a newish decent car. So firstly you get screwed out of money by the dealership as obviously they need to make money on both ends of the deal. Don't think your monthly payment would be less than R1500, so 10 months later, you would have paid all your repairs and you would have known the condition of everything in the car, something you cannot know on a secondhand car you bought now (Yes Dekra and xx point safety checks are a thing, but they don't strip it down to the bolts to inspect it so small things will pass them by)

Honestelaly (yes that is a word in my Engrish dictionary) I would go with option A but I too am in the process of wanting to sell my small car to buy a small bakkie. But its not an itch, it's just that the wife has a car should we need more than two seats, and the loadbin would come in mightly handy for doing some sideline work. Not planning on upgrading, looking in the same pricerange

Quoted from where?

Also “about” 5k variance is not what I would call a quote.

Sounds like you haven’t gotten a proper quote for anything and just pulling random numbers out of thin air.

Nope, R3K for steering rack, R3K labor and R1250x2 CV joints. So not exactly R10K but still need to drive around or get them to get the parts. How is that from thin air? Like I said others quoted much more.

Maybe the parts for I20 dropped, but that mechanic says usually it much more.

Sure others here would tell you the same steering rack and labor is very expensive normally...

Sorry only got a 2 quoted from speedy that said R15 and another from backyard mechanic that said the same.

Then I got another person that said he can do it cheaper if I can supply the part which I can get for R3K if it is the real deal.

At 10 years old it's not exactly a spring chicken now either. The difference between a 15 year old and 10 year old car is negligible, it depends on how well it was looked after and maintained. After 4-5 years, the actual condition of the vehicle is far more of a determining factor than academic age.

You can spot a well cared-for 15-20 year old vehicle a mile away.

Spot on I save hundreds of thousands every year driving my little corsa lite around well serviced 270k on the clock insurance/petrol is cheap as chips, barely gets driven why buy a fancy car that will sit in the garage. I have better things, life and experiences to spend my money on. One day when it needs to be replaced it will be im in ZERO rush.
