Expensive flights not going anywhere — Experts

One can fly under R2,000 return between Johannesburg and Cape Town again since February, even as low as R1,500 - so I don’t know where this notion of “triple what it used to be” comes from.

It was much higher than usual for the better part of last year, especially when Comair folded, but sometime last year FlySafair said prices would come down in February again, and it did.

I also question the statement that SA has a shortage of pilots - I know of several qualified airline pilots that can’t find work with one of the local airlines right now (many of them Comair pilots)

International flights not local.......

Was planning to travel central asia since start of 2020 but covid fk'd up everything. Now ticket prices are still hard to justify.

I question your ability to read.

I question the headline creators. It doesn't mention international flights and makes it seem like all flights where local makes up the majority of flights.

Pre Covid those flights where R450 to R750. I flew it a lot.

This is what happens when one uses tens of billions of Rands of tax payer money to bail out an SOE but turns a blind eye to the private competition (Comair) who only needed about R500 million to recapitalise after the COVID lockdowns.

In the end the tax payer loses and now the entire population loses the benefits of having robust competition.

I used to get a return ticket to mumbai for R7000 pre-covid, now if I am lucky I see a ticket for 14000.
Ethiopian airways used to be the cheapest for me now they are charging equal to emirates or qatar airways

International.. There is plenty of international competition flying flights daily to SA, yet pricing remains stupid.

Yip when it costs the same flying to Durban compared to flying to Tokyo, then I will rather fly to Tokyo via Singapore, which I will

There's a new thing now of selling flights without baggage allowance. Bags extra...
Add a bag on a flight from London to joburg and you're in for another 200 pounds.

Return flights on virgin are about 800 pounds each. Madness.

That I don't understand for international flights, who is flying international without a bag. My favorite part of "shrinkflation" for flights, though, is that you now need to pay to pick a seat. Gone are the days of rewarding those that came early enough, or spent the time camping the check-in website. No, that'll be another 50euro.

Bastards.

JHB to London return is R14000 to R15000 via Emirates That doesn't seem too stupid to me. Ten years ago it cost around R7000 to R10000 return so that seems to be in line with inflation and currency devaluation.

I bet that excludes luggage

You missed the International part. Buy yes, Cape Town is sometimes confused for a different continent.
