KZN crash: At least 35 people injured after truck causes 46-vehicle pile-up on M41 highway

When you have a foreign driver, who is possibly undocumented... its very easy to force them to drive a truck...

Even with a local driver, if you're enough of an arsehole its easy enough to get the guy to drive the truck.

Well then illegal foreigners seem to be the main issue imo. I'm still not seeing the forced part though. They have a choice at the end of the day.

They don't wanna lose their jobs.

Easy case for ccma.

Tow truck owners in KZN right now

Its not always the truckers/bus drivers fault.

There are unscrupulous operators who will force the guys to drive non-roadworthy trucks, and force guys to drive longer hours than is legally allowed and and and.
It's been the freaking wild west for a few years now, basically any rando who can afford to buy a truck, find a driver and sub-contract for sub-contractor transporting goods to and from Joburg.

Thing is, this truck had no reason to be on that stretch of road. It's odd as the road can only go to Durban along the coast and is not great for large trucks. There is also no toll to avoid, so what was he doing there.

Also, the sheer momentum and velocity to have caused the damage to so many vehicles and still flip at the end is phenomenal. This is not a brakes failure, this is either deliberate ( suicide ) or throttle failure where it was wide open. No way a geared down truck will have that much momentum.

How do they force someone to do this? They obviously have poorly maintained trucks but any driver can refuse to drive a truck that's not roadworthy. These trucks are supposed to have yearly roadworthy tests and im sure the majority of fraud and corruption happens at the point of inspection.
There are weigh bridges next to the road where trucks are checked.

It's time to mandate that all trucks over a certain weight have backup emergency brakes fitted in order to be roadworthy. I'll give them 12 months to comply.

I never said it was possible.

Then it would just be another random law/regulation that has no real impact...

I'm not having a go at you btw. I would largely agree that we need some solution to this trucking problem in the country, too many people are being killed and our roads are literal death traps these days.

That was the part that confuzzled me somewhat yesterday. I use that road regularly and I cannot for the life of me think what a truck like that is doing on that stretch of road. There is nowhere that it could be coming from what would need that sort of vehicle, and nowhere that it would be going to on that stretch either.
