Alarm bells for property owners in South Africa

Steep increases to municipal property rates and tariffs are forcing tenants and property owners to hunt for better deals – and many are looking to the Western Cape as the ideal location.

Oh nonsense! The Western Cape is the worst of them all. Many people are complaining about living costs, rates and taxes. This is the problem everywhere the DA is in charge. They are killing those with money off faster than the ANC does.

Got to give the DA credit when it's due.

We may 'kuk en betaal' here in the Western Cape but we do receive our services - trash is collected, potholes are fixed, maintenance of infrastructure continues (roadsigns are replaced, road markings repainted, etc), electrical and water outages are attended to asap, flooding is attended to, traffic lights work.

You get what you pay for.

WCP is very expesive with regards to rates and housing near the city. Suburbs I think are more reasonable but you would be looking at a serious commute as well. Of course if you are remote, makes no differance but I once looked at moving there and the entire cost of living was very high, food prices were more, schooling etc etc.

In my experience it's only been the property.

My rates and taxes were roughly the same as my family's back in Pretoria when I bought my first property down here in Cape Town.

Maybe it's just what I eat but my grocery bill went down. And ever since when I've gone back to visit, Checkers seems more pricy in Gezina than in Kenilworth or Muizenberg.

Granted I haven't exactly been scientific about this, just my general observation.

Importantly in Cape Town they don't wait for things to break. There is a lot of preventative maintenance going on all the time. The rates can be painful, but on the other hand I know that I can log an electrical or water fault on a weekend and they'll send people out to investigate and repair. Even on a Sunday. Most major traffic lights now operate during power outages.

In Cape Town the areas close to the city centre have always either been effectively slums or very expensive, but on the other hand today we no longer have almost all jobs concentrated in what used to be the central business district. Which suburbs are cheaper varies wildly and is not necessarily based on proximity to the old centre.

If the Cape is too expensive then you’re not compelled to move here. We get a lot for our money. Things are working here and we even have a lower stage of LS.

Sounds like a 1st world developed country!

LOL I agree rather stay where you are and don't come here to the Western Cape. This place is like Mad Max. It's a horrible dystopia. Life wherever you are in SA is much much better.

It's definitely better to be paying X for no services, blocked drains, potholed roads, and general rampant infrastructure degradation instead of 1.5X for a working municipality. First option is definitely a better deal.

Just a reminder, don't come here. The fewer people that migrate here the better.

The Cape only works on the surface but if you scratch that surface you will discover than the Cape: 1. could have had no LS by now, 2. CPT is pumping raw sewage into the seas, 3. no extra water sources have been created, 4. development was and is being done in an unsustainable way. The truth is the DA`s socialist grandstanding gives the impression that everything is working, but the important things have been neglected just like the ANC. The population is now completely more than what the water supply can handle, the chickens will be coming home to roost, I estimate new day 0 warnings for the Cape within the next year.

Both 1, 3 and 4 (which is tied to 2 mainly if we're honest) are things the national government is supposed to be responsible for. That the DA does anything at all to attempt to alleviate these things (plans for 500MW of generation capacity for CoCT metro and desalination plants) is just a bonus showing how far beyond their mandate they're prepared to go.

Point 2 I agree they shouldn't be doing it. They do however still do it a hell of a lot less than the rest of the country does. Their standards are still significantly higher.

The place is so much better run than the rest of the country that the major problem they have is they can't build infrastructure fast enough to handle the massive influx of people (which is part of the reason for part 2).

EDIT: wait no ignore what I said there. This place is terrible. DON'T COME HERE IT'S RIDDLED WITH SOCIALISM!!! People are dying of starvation in the streets! It's hell on Earth! They make you REGISTER YOUR SOLAR!!!!

AHHH blame it on the ANC that is just pathetic and predictable. My points still stand. It is people`s fault for voting for the DA and not Capexit.

You are trying to be sarcastic but the truth is that people are dying of hunger in the streets of CPT, the CBD is riddled with tents and vagrants.

Just saw the new rates estimate for my Cape house. Massive hike despite the lies of CoCT that they will be reducing this. Lying socialist scum.

It's not a blame thing. It's literally their responsibility.

Getting the water and electricity from the main supply distributed through the city is the city's responsibility.

That you're unaware of that is nobody's problem but your own. (I'd blame socialism if I were you)

I agree. DO NOT COME HERE PEOPLE! It's a desolate hellscape compared to other major metros. Pretoria etc. doing waaaaay better. Stay there.
